He didn’t explain why.

The explanation would inevitably be that Trump ordered something than caused them to retaliate, and since accidents can happen they aren't to blame for it, the catalyst for their actions is.

The trouble is though that every country is responsible for their actions, provoked or not. They fired the missile, they and their supporters, must acknowledge that Iran needs to hold their hand up and take responsibility.

I must see if I can trawl back to media discussion of the US's shooting down of the airliner en route Bandar Abbas-Dubai in 1988, there must still be somewhere on the Net the video from the bridge of the warship in question ("Gotcha", much cheering, whoopin' an' a-hollerin') - all aboard the flight were lost. Had AB then existed it might have been discussed on AB, perhaps by the same contributors ?

Who is the pure white angel ? Who deserves more derision, bile and outright bigotry ?

Ah, but the USA didn't deny it......they were operating in conditions which made it impossible to do so. Then when a video emerges of a helicopter crew joking about their "fun" showering a wedding party (civilians, should it be necessary to point that out) with high velocity large calibre fire then the full fury of indignation over it being leaked is released. Accusations of treason and everything in that part of the lexicon is used and the messengers labelled high criminals and vows of hunting them to the limits of Earth issued.

Is there any hope that a balanced view will have the upper hand, not to mention acknowledgement of how desperately sad and tragic this is in the scheme of things ? This time the Iranians were not as lucky as the Soviets when the man chose to ignore the false warnings of a massive attack rather than press the button. There is absolutely no guarantee that such luck will on the day not also elude the Americans, British, French, etc. How will each of those then react - perhaps like the USA, everything depending on whether they thought they had "things (secrecy) under control" ? Had a frightened and cornered animal bitten someone there would be no shortage of people protecting it from criticism, but here it is "they" (the foreign scum) versus "us".

Well it was 6 years ago Peter believe it or not and it was actually a Malaysian airliner :-)
That was also a mistake (presumably although to this day Russia uniquely denies responsibility which has been proved beyond doubt).
I don’t think we were headed for a war, but yes it’s true that tragically this incident has probably made it less likely anyway.

I wonder if the Iranian authorities can afford the massive compensation bill coming their way.Perhaps if they didnt fund worldwide terrorism they would have more cash in the bank to pay for these kind of "accidents".
