If anything, he is agreeing the statues HAD to be boarded up to protect them.

And he is right. He is not attacking Khan for protecting them, he says they HAD to be boarded.

Bobbi, the person in charge of the police in London is Priti Patel, not Sadiq Khan. Khan is saving her blushes by preventing statues from coming under attack, which is all he has the power to do. If the police have to be called into action, it's Patel who has to do it.

If there was a genuine concern of damage, and it was felt that the police were too incompetent to step in to prevent it, doesn't that suggest that the demo needed to be called off ? Covering up, whilst one can understand the limited aim of preventing damage, is a win for the vandals; and the greater aim of having peaceful demonstrations and arresting all that misbehave, goes to pot.

Covering them up is sending the message to the retired military personnel that there is no need to turn up.

Also that others (who have been labelled far right) don't need to turn up.
