um been said before - the figures come from the ONS and they are very sensitive to being accused of bias... I wd say this was VERY unlikely

That's not quite true, JD -- I made the same mistake myself a few weeks/months ago, but the FTPA actually specifies (Section 1(3)) that the election will be held on "the first Thursday in May in the fifth calendar year following that in which the polling day for the previous parliamentary general election fell". So it's May 2024.

Perhaps, Naomi, although there's also a question of whether local lockdowns dragged out over months is better than one short, sharp shock of a lockdown.

It's hard to see how the current approach is working in any sense: it seems to be struggling to control the spread of Covid-19, but also stifles any hope of an economic recovery.

It will depend on how effective a "circuit-breaker" lockdown is. If you provide the necessary support then businesses can cope, and if it is effective in slowing the spread again then it avoids a more prolonged effect in future. Bearing in mind that hospitalisations and deaths are rising, it's difficult to see how we can avoid taking more severe action forever anyway.
