naomi - // AH, at least you now concede that these people consider themselves to be observing their faith literally rather than it’s nothing to do with Islam. Well done. //
First of all, please don't patronise me, I am not a pupil in your class.
Second of all, I have never said that FGM is 'nothing to do with Islam'.
What I have said is that it is perverse and extreme interpretations of religious writings, in the same way that many faiths have adherents who carry what they see as their correct understanding of their teachings to extremes, resulting in abhorrent behaviour.
I do not beleive that FGM is part of the teachings of Islam in the way it is accepted by millions of followers all around the world, any more than 'If thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out ...' is seen as a literal instruction by any Christian with normal intelligence and not suffering from psychotic delusions.
The teachings are there in both faiths - written nd passed down.
Only the interpretation varies - depending on the mindset of the individual to twist them to justify abhorent behaviour, or not.
