Knowing what we know now, what should the West have done in response to 9/11 and other atrocities?

After watching the News on this I can’t hep but wonder why we and the Americans taught ( if that’s the right word)the Afghan army to defend itself over the last 20 years, there’s clearly no evidence of them using such skills

After the first world war until the invasion by the Russians, Afghanistan was run by a monarchy.
In 1971 King Zahir Shah of Afghanistan was invited to Buckingham Palace for his State Visit. The King and HM the Queen enjoyed a coach ride together in London.

Bin Laden was a Saudi but he was against the regime there just as much as he was against America - he saw the two as being hand in hand (and he was right).

Here's a story from back in 1996

You can lead a horse to water etc...

My guess is that men won't suffer too much under the Taliban so they don't think it's worth risking their lives to oppose them & probably lose.
The west should have thrown away the book of rules on fair play and swiftly disposed of each and every perpetrator of atrocities and each and every one involved with them in their quest for mass slaughter.
Yup, like a crusade, that'll teach 'em.
Did naomi really suggest a holocaust
Nothing we can do will ‘teach them’ Douglas. They’re not interested in our lessons.
Roadman, no, Naomi didn’t suggest that. Read my post again.
This should cheer Naomi up…

// In late 2001, around 8,000 Taliban fighters, including Chechens, and Uzbeks as well as suspected members of al-Qaeda, surrendered to the Junbish-i Milli faction of Northern Alliance General Abdul Rashid Dostum, a U.S. ally in the war in Afghanistan, after the siege of Kunduz. Several hundred of the prisoners, among them American John Walker Lindh, came to be held in Qala-i-Jangi, a fort near Mazar-i-Sharif, where they staged a bloody uprising which took several days to quell. The remaining 7,500 were loaded onto containers for transport to Sheberghan prison, a journey that in some cases took several days.[13] Human rights advocates say hundreds or thousands of them went missing.
In late 2001, Carlotta Gall, Jamie Doran and Newsweek began reporting rumors that Dostum's forces, who were fighting the Taliban alongside the US Special Forces, intentionally suffocated as many as 2,000 Taliban prisoners in container trucks in an incident that has become known as the Dasht-i-Leili massacre. //
Why do you think that will cheer me up, gromit? Are you another like Douglas and roadman who’ve read something in my post that isn’t there?
Why do I always feel I've been hairdryered by a supply teacher after an encounter with naomi? :-P
you are being cleansed in the fires of righteousness, douglas.

In answer to naomi: there was no need at all to throw away the rule book of fair play. The west was winning, even while fair play was in force. Then the politicians screwed up.
Find out which mosques terrorists have been attending & close them down for 6 months, if there is anymore terrorist activity during that period, bulldoze them. Continue with this procedure until either terrorism stops or there are no mosques left standing.
What is going on somewhere near you:
First job - make sure that they can't grow any more poppies!

Afghans are well-known horticulturalists.
We are the Infidel, the enemy of Islam so this ‘new’ we won’t stop anyone leaving and people won’t be harmed ,has more holes in it than a sieve , they going to be known by the Emirate State of Afghanistan , Women won’t be allowed Education and will be forced to wear the burqa while no doubt they’ll concentrate on reaping havoc on us and the Americans

I think that was rather the point duggie was making. What the West is trying to achieve in places like Afghanistan is no different to the Crusades of the 11th-13th centuries. The regimes in these places are not like ours. The outlook of the people there is not like ours. They have a different religion, a different philosophy, a different way of life. I don't know why western nations seem to think that every other nation should subscribe to their ideal model. The people in many of these places cannot even get on with each other, let alone with outsiders. They usually need a strong regime imposed on them. A perfect example of this is Iraq. Saddam Hussein ruled the place with a rod of iron and as soon as he was deposed it degenerated into a shambles. These people need discipline, firm boundaries and ruthless imposition of the rules. It's the only language they understand and even if it's not, it is none of our business.

The money saved by our troops' withdrawal can be put to much better use. Instead of supporting the invasion of another nation the government can concentrate on suppressing the invasion of these shores. Around 10,000 people (that are known of) have arrived from across the Channel so far this year and the so-called border force expects that number to at least double by the end of the year. That's a far more pressing problem than concerning ourselves with educating women in a land some 3,500 miles away.
