Common sense would suggest that having fought a war for decades and the enemy haven't capitulated and are still armed, you don't start withdrawal with the people who have the weapons leaving behind the civilians who don't.

it is foolish to go into wars alongside the USA, their sole priority is the USA (and so it should be). Harold Wilson was the only one who saw this.

Britain obviously owes the USA (and Russia) a lot for winning WW2 for us but I think that debt is long paid.

No.

Has he made a catastrophic error of judgement in the way that American troops were pulled from Afghanistan - yes. However it should be for the American people to impeach Biden rather that for him to cut and run.

naomi, if you think Britain would have been on the winning side without the aid of America and the Soviet Union, I can only politely suggest you read more history.

More American soldiers than British died. And something like 30 times as many Russians died. (Those are just military totals. The Soviet civilian total alone was something like 15 million.) Without their self-sacrifice, you'd be speaking Deutsch today.

I wouldn't say Russia came to our aid in WW2. Hitler attacked Russia & they defended themselves and counter attacked. If Hitler hadn't had designs on eastwards expansion I doubt the Russians would have become involved.

fair point, davebro, and you could say the same of the Yanks if the tora tora toras hadn't attacked Pearl Harbor. In each case the proximate cause was Axis folly. But as things turned out, they did join the war in Europe, and Britain would not have been on the winning side if they hadn't.

Probably not, jno - but they didn't win it for us. We were there long before either of them. I trust that's straight enough.

In fact to a certain extent it was us (and the USA) that came to the aid of the Russians - supplying them with armaments etc. via the convoys to Archangel & Murmansk.
