Is this still going on, or is the war on terror / Iraq more important? I'm assuming if it isn't going on anymore that the drugs won.

c.f. Afghanistan and opium. You are correct.

Funny, according to the recent issue of Wired - the War on Drugs is soooo yesterday!

the War on Drugs never meant anything - unless it was to drive money through the pockets of politicians/CIA/unsavoury third world characters. And as a justification to imprison poor blacks (America we're talking about here!) and rain down chemicals on poor brown people in Columbia.

And how effective is it? Heroin and cocaine use is still going up in the US and British users are the biggest consumers of cocaine in Europe.

Yah flashpig, drugs won!

It does seem strange that the Taliban were more effective at reducing the production of opium than the combined might of the US and British military.
I also find it strange the Taliban were accused of producing masses of opium/heroin to fund their cause and yet more is grown today. What does that say????

Drugs have been quite a gracious winner then. We haven't all been forced into their way of life and they don't rub our noses in it, metaphorically. I barely even knew we'd lost.
