I was thinking last night (dangerous, I know) That I paid 40% Tax for the first 10yrs I worked. 50% in Scotland. And I wasn't a red bracered, Champagne swilling City spiv. Honestly, MrF.
I think the top rate was over 90% in those days. I had zero interest in politics then (better things to do/think about) and never really considered it my money in the first place.
I'd known nothing else, so it just seemed normal. It was a pleasant surprise when it went to 33%. Then 25%, then 20% in what seemed fairly short order.
Certainly not suggesting today's rate is too low. Just trying to convey to young? MrF (who I like) that Governments when given the opportunity will quite happily squeeze the pips out of the poor (sob) and hardworking who unlike the rich have no escape from them.
