I referred to Ms Griner as "they" because I do not know the person's preferred pronoun. It's called respect. You may have heard it.
A minimal piece of research tells me that she is biologically female, was bullied at school because of her size, her father refused to believe she was gay when she first came out to her parents, and she uses the pronouns she/her, which I also now use to reference her.

It really isn't difficult to look these things up.
^^^^It isn't difficult to look these things up. She has been married twice and has twin girls from the first (IVF).She likes to wear men's clothes . She is not the tallest woman in the world .
//I referred to Ms Griner as "they" because I do not know the person's preferred pronoun. It's called respect. You may have heard it.//

Well, she participates in women's sport at top level so what she prefers is neither here nor there. She cannot expect people to become involved in the nonsensical issue of gender identity to suit her preferences. If there are people who crave respect for their non-specific gender identity, I suggest they devise a new set of pronouns (such it/its/it) rather than hijack plural pronouns. It avoids confusion.
I did look it up, mozz. Call me old fashioned but I don’t think referring to a woman as ‘she’ is disrespectful.
Sorry, I thought the previous page was peak AB, but this page tops it!
naomi its not up to you nor I to decide how to refer to someone. If they want to be referred to as 'He' or She' or They' then its common courtesy to use their preferred pronoun. How hard can that be? I don't think Brittney Griner has made a big deal of her sexuality, why is AB so obsessed with it?
Naomi - //I did look it up, mozz. Call me old fashioned but I don’t think referring to a woman as ‘she’ is disrespectful.//

No suhgestion that it is Naomi, just as it isn't disrespectful to use preferred pronouns. I was unsure, especially given some of the comments about her in this thread, as to her preferences, so erred on the side of caution.
Judge, "it", in my eyes at least, makes the individual sound more like an object than a person.
mozz: "I referred to Ms Griner as "they" because I do not know the person's preferred pronoun. It's called respect. You may have heard it. " - So your default is the least likely pronoun, so called "non binary", one that has only recently arisen out of the latest woke cobras and used by a few attention seekers? Right oh!
What prison was BG in after the conviction in russia?
Sorry, I thought the previous page was peak AB, but this page tops it!

there is always something to laugh at on AB

If she is competing in ladies' sport - she has to be a gurl innit - she to ABers

I thoght she was dumb ( as dumb as a man that is!) to import drugs into Russia

and the other fella the Americans want back, he was told not go in the first place innit?
Tora//so called "non binary", one that has only recently arisen out of the latest woke cobras and used by a few attention seekers? Right oh!//

My default for someone that has been in the news and has certain, more masculine, attributes is they, yes. In real life, I would expect to be informed if I've used incorrect pronouns.

I'm sure you would refuse to use different pronouns, even when told otherwise. Thankfully, I'm not you.
mozz: "I'm sure you would refuse to use different pronouns, even when told otherwise. Thankfully, I'm not you." - Nope but I default to he or she until I know otherwise. How can you possibly pick the least likely choice as your default?
//How can you possibly pick the least likely choice as your default?//

Did you actually read what was written? I said that I only use it in the case of someone like Ms Griner of who I genuinely didn't know.
"Did you actually read what was written? I said that I only use it in the case of someone like Ms Griner of who I genuinely didn't know. " - The default for a woman is "she" are you really saying you did not know she was a woman?
She was held in IK-2,which is a womens prison.
fripfrip: "She was held in IK-2,which is a womens prison." - what no "non Binary" slammer in Russia? Who'd have thunk it?
Interesting - the debate had swung around to Ms Griner's orientation.

But it hasn't fulfilled my initial worry. That her gender may be used to argue that she was unfit for swapping.

Instead, that subject is being used by AB'ers to argue their own perceptions in the minefield of biological fluidity.

This could run and run...
Brittney Griner was born a female, raised a female, plays women's basketball where she's won two Olympic gold medals, identifies as she/her ... what has she done to deserve all the speculation in this thread, which was supposed to be about her release from a Russian jail where she's been since (oddly enough) February this year?
