Aren’t they arguing there is no biological fluidity, just 2 sides of a coin?
The prisoner exchange should not have taken place, who in their right mind would go to a hostile country carrying contraband .
elipsis: "Brittney Griner was born a female, raised a female, plays women's basketball where she's won two Olympic gold medals, identifies as she/her ... " - Indeed so how cold anyone default her personal pronoun as "non binary"?
//The default for a woman is "she" are you really saying you did not know she was a woman?/

On the basis of this thread, I wasn't 100% certain, no, and it looks like many of the other ABers aren't sure either.

If I had thought you would pounce on my use of pronouns (on a thread you've previously had little interest in posti on) I wouldn't have bothered. Then again, with hindsight, I should of known. It's kind of your MO isn't it?
Perlease!
Mozz71
Did you actually read what was written? I said that I only use it in the case of someone like Ms Griner of who I genuinely didn't know.

Isn't that likely to offend?

''Why have you referred to my friend as they?''

'Oh, I used they because I had no idea if it were a woman or a bloke'
Well Roy, if any of Brittney Griner's friends post here, I will be sure to offer my apologies.
I wasn't talking about Brittney Griner...as I think you know.
Roy, earlier I wrote //In real life, I would expect to be informed if I've used incorrect pronouns.//

So face to face, I would use he or she, and apologise if corrected otherwise.
Meaghan. I’ll thank you not to preach to me.

Mozz, Roy at 22.33 has it in one.
What has she done to deserve all the speculation in this thread, which was supposed to be about her release from a Russian jail where she's been since (oddly enough) February this year?
// just 2 sides of a coin? //

Absolutely!

Inspite of those who would say otherwise, notwithstanding rare and extraordinary biological and physiological exceptions, one's sex is determined at birth and is immutable.

Therefore BG was born a woman and she will die as a woman. I cannot understand why NJ does not accept this?

Moving on. To be clear, anyone who lives and breathes, their sexuality is of no business to anyone other than to themselves! However, we must never capitulate to the behaviour of and for example, a paedophile.

Thus BG is a lesbian and that is solely her business and nothing to do with anyone else.

As to how a person identifies, unconditionally consent to their wishes. All genders must be respected!

The emphasis on their chosen and preferred pronoun really should not be an issue, unless you're writing up a report on that individual. If it is known, simply address them by their name.

It is important to note, gender issues are of public concern when and for example; a man identifies as a woman and feels they ought to be entitled to use the same 'spaces' as those frequented by a natural born female. Toilet facilities, female prisons, women's sport etc

The paragraph directly above, will cause disquiet amongst some OPs.
//As to how a person identifies, unconditionally consent to their wishes. //

Not on your nelly! You support lies if you want to but don't demand that I do likewise.
//naomi its not up to you nor I to decide how to refer to someone. If they want to be referred to as 'He' or She' or They' then its common courtesy to use their preferred pronoun.//

I disagree. If somebody is participating in women’s sport, then “she” is the appropriate pronoun.

// As to how a person identifies, unconditionally consent to their wishes.//

So you expect sane people to unconditionally indulge others in their fantasies just because it is their preference? Just because a man “identifies” as a woman, it does not make him a woman. To facilitate that make-believe rather casts doubt on the sanity of the person doing so.

//Judge, "it", in my eyes at least, makes the individual sound more like an object than a person.//

I tend to agree. The language convention of “masculine/feminine/neuter” only accommodates the two sexes. Since gender is now largely meaningless I would suggest that language would do better to comply with that principle. The very small minority of people who are unhappy with that need to come up with a set of non-gender-specific pronouns if they want their preferences to be used because “they” (etc.) are plural pronouns. The fact that some people have begun to use them to refer to single people does not alter that. It just makes their musings sound daft.

// But it hasn't fulfilled my initial worry. That her gender may be used to argue that she was unfit for swapping.//

I’ve not done that Andy. Until Sunday I’d never heard of her. I have no idea why she was in the chokey in Russia nor who she was being swapped for and why. I only began participating in this thread when her appearance was mentioned.

//It is important to note, gender issues are of public concern when and for example; a man identifies as a woman and feels they ought to be entitled to use the same 'spaces' as those frequented by a natural born female. Toilet facilities, female prisons, women's sport etc

Why should it cause disquiet for anybody? It would cause me disquiet if it was not of public concern.
NJ - //// But it hasn't fulfilled my initial worry. That her gender may be used to argue that she was unfit for swapping.// //

I would never expect that of you, your views are always too balanced and well-considered for that.

I was referring to the coterie of AB'ers who contorted themselves out of shape in their efforts to confer sainthood on Lady Hussey, while condemning to the trash bin the reputation of Ms Fulani, in the endless debate about the palace charity function debacle.
> I only began participating in this thread when her appearance was mentioned.

Her height and her shoe size before you got involved, typical topics of conversation about a basketball player. But thank you, New Judge, for taking the opportunity on this thread about a woman being arrested in Russia on Feb 17, a week before they invaded Ukraine, to continually give us your views on gender and transgender issues rather than this woman's exchange for a Russian arms dealer. Truly enlightening ... you are obsessed!

Brittney Griner is a 6'9" women's basketball player, with size 17 shoes, a woman who's won two Olympic golds.

By way of contrast, Shaquille O'Neal was a 7'1" men's basketball player, with size 23 shoes, a man who won one Olympic gold. Here he is standing next to Arnold Schwarzenegger:

Brittney, woman; Shaquille, man; both top basketball players. He is way bigger and more manly than her, she is way smaller and more womanly than him. I really hope that helps ...
//I really hope that helps ...//

Not really. She looks like a bloke in more ways than her height and shoe size. I assume that the authorities who run women's basketball - and the other players - are happy with her participation and that's all that matters. It doesn't mean I have to be convinced though.

//.... you are obsessed!//

I'm not obsessed. I have a concern about men masquerading as women, particularly when they participate in women's sport. I've also concerns about men masquerading as women being placed in situations which put women at risk.

Of course I'm not saying for one moment that this young lady is involved in any of this. It is a general discussion. I've no real knowledge of why she was imprisoned in Russia and no views on whether her exchange was appropriate or not.
> She looks like a bloke in more ways than her height and shoe size.

Nice. 10 months as a pawn in a Russian jail, and that's the best you have to say. But you're not obsessed, oh no ...
