naomi, I also think the money could be better used - though not by sacking the usual "middle managers" who are scapegoats for everything these days.

But the plain fact is that if you're short of staff because people don't want to work for you, then you'll have to make a more attractive offer than you're making now. That's not a communist precept, it's pure capitalism.
