Many of these deaths are older people who got in to drugs, especially heroin, in the 90s and before and have suffered ever since. Mostly in the 35-55 age bracket with decades of drug abuse, poor nutrition and general poor health. I think this is quite a balanced article but there are many trying to understand and explain the shocking statistics....

MissTerious - Apologies for going off-thread.

On my view, and I am culturally stereotyping here, I believe the Scottish temperament and character can lend itself to excess indulgence and addiction, especially in the lower social stratospheric of its society.
I was going to give an opinion but after reading AH's response I will not even bother!

Apologies not needed. Thanks for your answer. We all go off thread ;0).
I must admit in my very last job I was dealing with a lot of Glaswegian construction workers on the telephone. Apart from the fact that I could never understand their language, they were a very angry lot. But that's my only knowledge of the Scottish temperament!

Please give your opinion Red!! ............... Lottie runs and hides......
AH, you seriously think Class A are worse than alcohol?

Just out of interest do you
a) Partake of alcohol
b) Partake of Heroine or Meth or anything (or would you if it was legal)?
I think AH last comment was nothing beyond ignorant!
(With apologies, A-H,) stratum perhaps, stratosphere tends to be high
Helen, if I were a mod I'd have deleted it
I personal opinion is that Scotland for many decades was ignored by the rest of the UK (and by that I mean England) and its only been since the money started increasing from UK that industry has increased in Scotland.
Now there is more money they are playing catch up.
As I said this is my personal view on the matter and no links to back it up just what I have seen from growing up there and visiting relatives after we moved.

Stereotyping is not good Helen, although I admit that I wouldn't like to come face to face with those builders!!
Barry Mods are not interested in deleting posts like that.
Barry - Posts are deleted because they contravene Site Rules, not because you happen to disagree with then.
Red - It's not a matter of not 'being interested', the post does not contravene Site Rules.
I think negative stereotyping of any class of people, by nationality, race, gender or religion is offensive
barry: "Many of these deaths are older people who got in to drugs, especially heroin, in the 90s and before and have suffered ever since. " - yeah they watched Ewan McGregor climbing into a toilet in Trainspotting and thought, "wow I gotta get me soma dat"!
Question Author
Red, would that affect the huge gap in drug deaths?
Never saw the film so can't comment
I don't know MissT - as I said its not based on anything other than what I have witnessed growing up.
In the 90's there was a huge problem with poverty and people trying to escape it by making use of cheap drugs.
I suppose now that addiction is playing catch up
Question Author
It's only in recent years that I watched Train Spotting.
