I admit know very little about Scotland, its politics, etc. But those are shocking statistics.

Many of these deaths are older people who got in to drugs, especially heroin, in the 90s and before and have suffered ever since. Mostly in the 35-55 age bracket with decades of drug abuse, poor nutrition and general poor health. I think this is quite a balanced article but there are many trying to understand and explain the shocking statistics....

I agree with most of what AH says, but his answer is about the general issue with drugs.
i don't know why there are m any more drugs related deaths in Scotland. I don't think that there are more addicts than elsewhere.
Maybe the geography of the country and the distance from medical assistance?
I don't know if our police carry anti-overdose injectors.
Maybe the addicts freeze to death or drown due to the awful weather.
I don't know.

It is true that Glasgow did not recover as well as it could have done after the devastation of bombings during WWII, it is fair to say due in part to lack of government investment. Shipbuilding and other industries went in to severe decline leading to mass unemployment of people already living on the edge.
Perhaps this contributed to drug problems that intensified 30 years ago, it certainly didn't help.

Interesting Barry, could well have contributed.
My grandfather worked in the Glasgow shipyards during WW1. Went up with his new wife as a young man during the 30s recession. They lived in a couple of rooms in the Gorbals. He didn't have to go to war because of his essential work as an engineer. I'm off topic now!

YMB - // AH, you seriously think Class A are worse than alcohol? //
No, the exact opposite, I think alcohol is worse than Class A.
It's vastly more widespread, it has, across the world, millions more addicts, it causes antisocial behaviour, violence, crime, countless road deaths, and its cultural acceptance means there is no will to ban it in the way that people want to ban Class A, for similar reasons, albeit on a manifestly smaller scale.
Just out of interest do you
a) Partake of alcohol
b) Partake of Heroine or Meth or anything (or would you if it was legal)?
Neither, and no, I wouldn't. I have never needed artificial stimulants to alter my mood to make me relax in company.

I think AH last comment was nothing beyond ignorant! //
Then I am delighted to be educated!
I have offered a solution, and my reasons for it.
How about you do the same?
And it will obviously need to be a different solution to the current 'War On Drugs', since I assume I can take your agreement that it manifestly fails to work on any level whatsoever.
