the ICJ has ruled that the occupation of gaza, the west bank, and the golan heights by Israel is illegal and has ordered that country to end these occupations and return to its pre-1967 borders

should we sanction israel if they refuse?

There is no such place as Palestine.

There is only Israel in which there are parts called The Gaza Strip and the West Bank.

are you crazy ? do you want your thread to last a shorter time than one of my posts ?

ICJ have never been able to enforce their judgements,, and I dont think we have a history of doing it

Does anyone have an URL - but the international law on this is pretty strightforward, 1) war is bad 2)  invading and occupying a coutry is also bad. 3) Israel has done (2) and therefore it is bad.

I did pass  an exam in this you know ( aw shucks, PP you sholdnt boast)  - no no it did have international law part I and Part II on the top etc

Why should we?

The ICJ has no powers to implement its opinions and like most UN institutions is a complete waste of time and money, serving only to provide "jobs for the boys".

It's taken that "court" 57 years to come up with an opinion on Israel's occupation of disputed land in that area and it seems odd that they've done so only since the atrocities committed by Hamas. I see no reason why the UK should put ourselves out to help enforce the court's opinion.

there is no such place Palestine - my god the ICJ must be wrong! Phew thank god for that !

I was a little worried. Post no 2 ( mine) was a bit.... heady

it seems odd that they've done so only since the atrocities committed by Hamas.

what all 32 000 of them? sounds as tho' we are back to AB on a sat afternoon

The ICJ are a total joke.Where the hell were they on 7th October last year?No-where to be seen.I hope the UK isnt funding these bunch of numpties.

@14.41.Those 32000 would still be alive if the Palestinians didnt start this current war on 7th October last year,Pete.

It's not a ruling - it's an opinion.

The UN made a referral to the ICJ following a vote on 30.12.22, a fair few year after 1967 and prior to the October attack last year.

Israel are a rogue state.

A rogue state eh Gromit.Israel is the only democracy in that region of failed states.I wonder when they will be holding the next Gay Pride march out in Tehran or Mecca or ,indeed,Gaza itself.

I read somewhere that opinions are like rear ends. Except mine of course.

lawyers can charge for opinions -  er do you charge for your rear end ?

Those 32000 would still be alive if the Palestinians didnt start this current war on 7th October last year,Pete.

er... they didnt all die on 7 Oct - but hey what do I know?

Not all are professionals  Pete.

But they all died following the terrorists actions on 7th October Peter. No 7th October all these people would still be alive.

Question Author

should a country be allowed to simply invade and occupy surrounding territories against the will of the people who live there? should they be permitted to take the land and brutalise those people?

the vast majority of people in gaza, the west bank, and the golan heights do not wish to be part of israel and are very often treated with violence (including torture and mass murder) if they protest it--even if they do so peacefully.

why should our governments support such a situation? how can it possibly be consistent with the rules of the UN?

Seems to me the 7th October attack last year wasnt "peacefully protesting"mate. It looked like genocidal anti-semitic mass murder to me.
