Yes, woke madness. This is a bloke commentating, making a completely harmless remark, nothing whatsoever offensive about it- it's the sort of thing my dad or brother would say.  A quiet word would have solved it- losing a job over it is utter madness.

Ooh look! Ageist stereotyping alert!

Good afternoon,

I am neither 'Joyless soulless, humourless neo fascists who have been told how to think what to be offended by etc'

I am old enough to have gone to school in the 70's and 80's to fight my way past the men to get a promotion that I deserved and constantly put up with comments like this one and many others.

Today's world has change for the better, thankfully.  The petty name calling against those that disagree with you is narrowminded.

Here's how I see it. I work in a relatively young industry. I manage a team of people in their 20s and 30s. Their behaviour is pretty much the same as when I was that age (apart from the fact that no-one smokes).

They're just like the other teams in my company - they're not cowed by the po-faced dictats of blah blah blah. They're simply not anything like those who preceded them (and this happens every generation).

What a lot of older folk don't get is that young people don't yearn to have the same attitudes as the elderly. Go to any city bar on a Friday night. You won't see groups sitting silently contemplating their boring future. You'll still see massive fun...just like when the oldies were young.

I wasn't aware that I was claiming to be their spokesman, but having brought up my two nephews who are now 21 and 30 I think I have a pretty good understanding of young people.

No - don't you think that it would be useful to get something first hand from a young person on this - especially a young woman...?

You're contradicting yourself, SP.

DDIL

I remember even in my first few jobs, you still had dinosaurs with attitudes that would blow you mind now.

I remember there was a very capable woman - the head of of our ForEx department. I overheard a group of men in the lunch queue discussing "who she had to blow" to get where she is.

It was like that - what some refer to as harmless banter.

It'd rather have what we have now than what we had then.

Right, I just asked my youngest who happened to be round today.

She really cant see the problem with it, as she said people just look into things too much.  And then promtly made a sexist remark about her husband!   It works both ways.

You are talking cobblers SP, and when you start gong on about 'rightwing' we see it even more.  You may not like it but the word woke has changed, just like the word Gay.  Did the right wing bastadise the word Gay too?

Accept it or get left behind.

sp: " Go to any city bar on a Friday night. You won't see groups sitting silently contemplating their boring future. You'll still see massive fun...just like when the oldies were young." - everywhere I've seen the saucepans they are all staring blankly at their dogs barely moving. probably looking at twittock or something.

i think they made the right choice. I am sure there is lots lf work involved in commentating but at the end if the day it is not a very demanding job and quite a cushy one at that. at a bare minimum a commentator needs to think before they speak. it's not unreasonable to expect some professionalism. he can go for jobs more suited to his lax and rather stupid style.

"everywhere I've seen the saucepans they are all staring blankly at their dogs barely moving. probably looking at twittock or something."

you are out of touch

17:28, I saw it thursday just gone, even two newly weds were sitting opposite each other staring like zombies at their phones. I have rarely seem someone under 30 go 30 seconds without looking at the dog.

That reads a bit like a line from an Archers script and is every bit as entertaining.

I think most people have got the sp on sp1814,i wish he would give us all a rest from his smug little world.

"One strike and you're out" seems a bit harsh for poor old commentators with a Pavlovian response. Three strikes seems more reasonable ...

Question Author

The small minority who think that a well-liked, long-standing sports commentator, should have his livelihood taken from him for saying, " they were "finishing up", adding "you know what women are like... hanging around, doing their make-up" are at best, unfair and out of touch, or at worst, complete cretins.

I think you are wrong khandro, at best they are cretins at worse they are moronic, neo fascist plonkers.

It was his employers who deprived him of his job.....

Fired for being an unfunny cliché merchant, how outrageous...

On that basis can we expect a root and branch clearout at Match Of The Day et al?
