If �135,000 lands in your bank account
In the news today a Woman went to the cash point to find �135,000 in her bank account that wasent hers.
She blew most of it in weeks.
Would you do the same?
I would, I think if its their mistake then its tough.
Instead of blowing it all on holidays and plasma screens, I would transfer the lot over to another bank then if they asked for it back then you could have a few quid interest from their mistake before giving it back.
I dont think the lady should be in court over this. Its all wrong.

Wow, well done women what restraint you have show.
The best thing would have been to put it in a high interest savings account, I have a special trigger on my account which once a month transfers any money over a certain thereshold over to a higher interest savings account. Therefore I would get away with having this money in a higher interest account and could claim that I was never aware than the money was in my account in the first place.

This thread was going well until it descended in to a love-in between China Doll and NJOK - gets a room.
From some of the posts it appears there is no point in prison because it was a one-off!
Aw ****-it, let's just do the same for every other crime that is a one-off. Perjury by Archer and Aitken, one off, shouldn't have ever have been banged up.
Rape by Tyson, another one-off, should never have been jailed.
Tax evasion by Piggott - one off, should never have been jailed.
Drink driving by Tony Adams, one off, should never have been jailed.
How about this one - Murder by, oh I don't know, let's say, errr, Huntley, this was a one-off and he should never have been jailed.
After all, what purpose would it serve?

In my rather simple little world I'm struggling to see the difference in the principle (the principle being it was a one-off and she won't do it again).

The consensus on here reading the postings ,seem to be that she must go to prison because it was theft , full stop - irrespective of the amount , i.e whether it was a fiver or the thousands she stole - yes ? ( which may or may not be my view )
How many people on here have found at one time or another in the past that they have gone home and found that they had 'accidentally ' nicked a pen or something from their workplace
Should they be sent down -afterall theft is theft - isn't it - or would that scenario be different ?

Comparing the theft of a fiver to �135,000 is in my opinion a little bit naive. If you want to do this, then do you think that people travelling at 31 mph in a 30 mph zone should be treated in the same way as someone doing 80mph in a 30mph zone?
I think that she should go to court and let the court decide what to do with her. I believe (and I may be wrong) that she knowingly decided to spend the money knowing that it wasn't hers. It is not a small sum - it is enough to buy a small house.

The reason for putting her is prison is fairly simple - she broker the law and also cannot afford to repay the debt. If they just gave here a slap on the wrist, if this happened in future no one would give it back - they would keep the money.
And Karlpeg - no a decent lawyer could not have got her off - she broke the law and must suffer the consequences.

If you ( by you I mean society ) consider theft to be theft ,then is stealing � 5 any different from stealing 135k ?
To you and me losing � 5 may not cause us to shed any tears - however to some people in society who haven't got any thing , losing � 5 would be of concern

No you wouldn't - you'd have a go at the car's rightful owner for parking it in the wrong place. Unless you've got DVLA ownership papers signed by the previous owner of the Ferrari it's not yours.

There's a separate organisation, BACS, who deal with money going from one bank to another. As far as I know they process these transfers and the instant that "your" bank actually has the money you can spend it. Your bank doesn't receive it from BACS and then withhold it for a couple of days.
