Should these two face prosecution and even banned from the BBC?
If these calls had been to an ethnic it would have been classed racist, and their feet would have not touched the floor.
I know before any wit makes the remark that Manuel is an ethnic (Spanish), it was only the part he played.

Ethel in her usual cutting way was the first to jump on me, and also thought she should put me right regarding Andrew Sachs nationallity.
Saxy_jag stated that it was equally discriminatory to label someone an "Ethnic". Perhaps he or she should consult a dictionary.
Perhaps the way Ilinked this matter with racist remarks was wrong. What I tried to get across, but obviously failed, was if this had been a remark or telephone call against an ethnic person who classed it offensive, then all hell would have been let loose and the BBC would had sacked these two immediately.
What I was trying to say was that it is just, if not more serious and hurtful to make lewd, sexual and offensive remarks againt one's Grandchild than making a racist remark to someone.
I am not alone in making similar connections, remarks made by comedians such as Bernard Manning have been mentioned as examples on numerous Radio stations, this weekend.
I hope in someway that I have been successful in making it more clear, perhaps some if not all will understand where I am coming from?

I have now read them all, and it seems the majority are against these two individuals.
Out of 80 plus answers the one person that shown themself to be the sickest was flip_flop. I wonder what his or her's thoughts are on racist jokes?
Brionon's comparison of flip_flop laughing at this very funny incident to concentration camp guards laughing at jews, was a brilliant analogy.

AOG, the analogy was and is deeply flawed - concentration camp guards making jokes about jews who are likely to be meeting their death is in a totally different stratosphere to Ross and Brand making a joke about having sex with somebody.
The two don't even remotely compare.
It is a ridiculous, absurd, flawed analogy - surely you can see this, can't you? (personally, I'd rather be shagged than killed, but hey, that's just me!).
Also, I'm struggling to see the correlation between my finding this incident funny (and I do - I found it extremely funny) and what my thoughts on racist jokes are? what is the connection?
Of my many posts on this website, you will not find one incident of me being racist. Not one. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of you.

Oh dear 'Mr Super Brain' (i don't think)
Of course I know what 'ethnic' means, just as every other person on this site does. That is everyone apart from you it would seem, knew who I was referring to, without my need to put minority on the end.
Pehaps next time you try to belittle a person, make sure you do not pick on someone who is obviously better educated than yourself.
But then, when one uses a working man's encyclopedia such as Wikipedia, a rubbish on-line encyclopedia that any Tom Dick or Harry can edit themselves, what does one expect?
AOG, have you any idea what 'ethnic' actually means? Believe it or not, were all ethnic. Yes even you!
Ethnic
adj.
1/
a, Of, relating to, or characteristic of a sizable group of people sharing a common and distinctive racial, national, religious, linguistic, or cultural heritage.
b. Being a member of a particular ethnic group, especially belonging to a national group by heritage or culture but residing outside its national boundaries: ethnic Hungarians living in northern Serbia.
2/
Relating to a people not Christian or Jewish.
Since I am Christian then you are wrong, I am not ethnic

I was just wondering that if you are so sick to find this "joke" extremely funny, and cannot understand why you are in the minority over this. Then perhaps you may also find many racist jokes also extreamely funny, what is the difference?
If you where to criticise someone as being a racist because they told, in their opinion a similar extremely disgusting racist joke, then you would leave yourself open to being called an hypocrite.

I love the way your mind works, AOG. It's always looking for that racial angle. And when there isn't one, it crudely cobbles one together.
In 1990, Arsenal footballer Tony Adams crashed his Ford Sierra into someone's house. He was punished for it
But imagine the furore if it hadn't been his Sierra, it had been his fist. And if it hadn't been somone's house, it'd been a black toddler's face. There'd be hell to pay. His feet wouldn't have touched the ground.
Classic, classic double standards.

Bloody hell it's a slow news day. Nearly a week after the event, it had received 2 complaints, now it's topped 10,000 because it's silly season and ther's nothing to write about apart from the credit crunch and the American election.
There are a couple of key issues with this one. A couple of idiots swearing at an old man is point one. Point two is a body such as the BBC deeming it broadcastable.
1. Swearing at old men and telling them that you've f*cked their grandaughter is crass and insulting, and being on the radio offers you no curtain to hide behind. You wouldn't do it in public so don't do it on the radio.
2. It should never have been broadcast. The controllers should have edited it out (it was a pre-recorded show), and then made apologies to those involved. Nothing would have come of it had they made the correct choice. If you go to any pre-recorded show such as HIGNFY etc, then there are numerous extremely dubious and tasteless jokes that get edited out. This is the point of the pre-record.
Brand and Ross should apologise and then it should get laid to rest. Being insulting is not the most horrendous crime in the world, and I'm sure that suitably chastised there isn't any need to sack the people invloved. Lord knows why Gordon Brown has entered his two cents into the debate, to further prolong the embarrassment of an elderly man. Well done.

You are right gormless, it is my money that is going towards paying them and I, for one, do not want them sacked.
This situation has become farcical - after the initial broadcast there were just 2 complaints. Since The Daily Pernicious et al have got hold of the story that number has increased to 10,000.
And the reason it has increased to 10,000? Becuase people have gone out of their way to listen to it just so they can be outraged.
Worse, I strongly suspect many people have complained who have not even listened to it.
I wonder how many ABers who have contributed to this thread fall in to one of the above two categories..............
The bruhaha is pathetic, it is a storm in a tea cup. The BBC have apologised, Ross has apologised and Brand has apologised. That should be the end of it - nobody should lose their jobs.

I think supernick has just posted one of the most sensible answers!!!
I listened to the whole thing last night to see what all the fuss was about and I have to admit like flip_flop I found it very funny. Yes it was out of order but it was funny, like 2 little school boys phoning up someone with not just 1 but 4 prank calls
Andrew Sach's whilst listening to his answer phone could only ever have thought that this was 2 imature idiots having a laugh with crude language, it could NOT have been taken seriously, especially as he was supposed to be appearing on the show and he should know what those 2 are like
All the calls for them to be sacked, sent to prison and even killed??? - sheesh get a life folks if you have got nothing better to do, I think there are far worse crimes than playing a silly joke that could only offend 2 maybe 3 people
I could see nothing racist about it at all but I suppose that now I have said that I found it funny that I will be subjected to abuse and called a racist, whereas I tend to call myself realistic

Sach's grand-daughter, Georgina Baillie, is far from innocent.
Check out this link. Also google her name and see what you come up with. Phew!!!!

Brand is untalented and unfunny but looks the part. Ross is a great entertainer and credit should be given to him for personally sending flowers and a letter of apology to Sachs and his family.
