Self service tills.....

Apparently they are much hated according to News 24 this morning. Can't think why I think they are a giant leap for mankind myself. No longer do I have to wait in line behind slow people doing annoying things eating into my lunch break. My local ASDA for example has 14 of them so I never have to queue. So self service tills, love em or hate em?

I had forgotten about those self scanners Jack the Hat. Yes, wonder why they didn't catch on. Probably too much shop lifting!

Jack....I know loads of people that didn't scan goods with those. The thing is the checkout staff never really new as 'buy one get one free' or any other offer didn't show on the scanner total until it had gone through.

I think they copped on in the end....

Although I think they are a great idea for people on strict budgets. They can scan as they go and know they are not going over their budget. Then go through the checkout as normal.

No one wants to carry a calculator...

Tesco is trialing "drive through" shopping,order on line and pick up within a 2 hour time slot,you go to a covered space,show a reference number and the staff load your shopping in to your boot of your car,adds £2 to the shopping bill...

never ok for a weekly shop and if I'm popping in tends to be for clothes so you have to get someone to take tag off ot birthday cards that are too light so the bagging area doesnt detect them.

Trouble is, Poodi, I like choosing my own goods, especially perishables. That is why I gave up having home deliveries from Tesco.

Hate them, I and several friends won't use them for much the same reasons as pasta gave. Oddly one friend who's a technophobe loves them...I think she must be doing it wrong ;o)

jack and Lottie, I think Waitrose still do those hand-held scanners.

I don't live in a 'Waitrose area'.......we're more Farmfoods, Aldi and Lidl, round here :o)

Generally always use them, however in London the Tesco Express self checkout is slower so I rarely use it there.

Did get into difficulty once in Bruxelles, picked the wrong language and also picked the till that only took cards (no UK ones). Still learnt my lesson there so use them no problem.

Alcohol is always a problem. I find in Bruxelles the staff are quicker to respond to the till alert so perhaps it is down to UK discupline ?

Its a go for me for baskets (Anything bigger get it delivered on line)

I imagine it's be risky using such technology in lower-class areas, jack, people would just nick the scanners and use them to change channels on the telly

We have a Waitrose not too far away, but it's dear!! So I shop between Morrisons and Lidls which I am now about to do!!

I have to shop around - Costco do the best oranges, Sainsbury's do the best lasagne, Waitrose do the best macadamias. Fortunately my area is well retailed.

If I'm by myself and I've nipped into the shop for just a few items I always use them, if the boss is with me she won't use them even if she's only one item she really hates them

A friend of mine claimed (but he used to fib quite a bit, so I'm not sure it's true) that he stuck home-made (photocopied, etc) barcodes over the real ones on his shopping which made his weekly bill a lot lighter.

An checkout-girl may have noticed the disparity between the item scanned and the 'item-name' shown, but the hand-scanners were a little more trusting, apparently.

Nope, it was him............Although because he was quite 'technically-minded' I've often wondered if it was actually true.........(more than I usually would, anyway).

I wouldn't put it past him....In hindsight I was a bit naive back then because I believed everything he said :-(
