Smoking in Pubs

I spent the evening out and about in Belgium (Arlon) last week and people were seriously smoking in every bar and restaurant. This seems ironic when these laws all seem to originate
from that very country!

Too late here as our pubs have been pulverised for multi flats.

Khandro -I found it weird in Dusseldorf and heres me thinking the ban was pretty widespread.You can also smoke in bars in Spain but no where else-its a complete anomoly.

Yes Dris, in southern Germany (Stuttgart area) you can find lots of smoking going on, I must say though many bars have good ventilation systems. What happened was; first there was a total ban, though the larger establishments were setting aside designated rooms for smoking and the law just turned a blind eye to it - surprising in such a supposedly 'law-abiding' country. Next the smaller bars said it was unfair as they did not have the sufficient space to set aside a room and they were losing business to the larger joints. A court case ensued and there claim was upheld and so it's now up to the owners discretion. Like Joggerjane I'm a non-smoker but have no objections to others doing so.

The argument for smokers going to a smoking pub and non smokers going to a non smoking pub is a naff one. I smoke...my partner doesn't. Which pub do we go to?

That's not the only U-turn the Netherlands has made. It's once tolerant society is going to the ugly right, hating Muslims and queers (love the old word, dislike the imported "gay"). You'll find a lot more things reversed I fear. The Dutch that we admired so much have feet of clay after all.

another pub has gone on the market near me to rent

one going up the road a free house has been closed for about 6 months up for sale not had one offer

the pub nearest to me is struggling and may shut

what happened to all the non smokers that would start going in the pubs if they had a smoking ban

It doesn't seem to have affected the pubs in Northampton. A few non local pubs have shut but they were crap anyway.

one free house at ashton has now been turned into flats

one old pub at didsbury sold and the owner knocked it down without permission and is going to build flats

Our high street is full of empty shops and thats not down to the smoking ban.The pubs are empty because people cant afford to drink in them anymore-its cheaper to get a carry out and go to a mates or stay at home-thats straight from a publicans mouth.He never once blamed the smoking ban.

I only know a few people that stopped going to the pub because of the smoking ban. Most pubs have accommodated smokers very well...

One pub I was in in Dublin the smoking area was nicer than the pub..

they have near me and near to trannies house

the nearest one to tranny, she came and told him they had to leave her words the smoking ban has killed the trade. they put temps in to run it don't know if it is still open

the next one up has been turned into flats


dris blame what you want but never have pubs shut like this not even in the thirties when they used to have soup ktchens no benefit in them days

1, local mp
2, licensee

who sees which of his customers has stopped coming into the pub

if the lcensee says most of the smokers have stopped coming into his pub do you believe him or some mp who says people have not got the money

It must depend on where you live. Like I said, the pubs round here are not really that much different. I would say quieter during the week for financial reasons. When I go I see the same faces as usual. Smokers and non smokers.

ummmm wish i could type as fast i can speak just come off the phone from a friend.
the club he goes in when it gets late the bolt goes on the front door and the ashtrays come out
they have had to do this because the smokers stopped going in the club.
the club was going to close so they turn a blind eye.
now every night all the old regulars have started going back in

Well I think I have a good standard of living compared to a lot of people but when we go to the pub and its £7.50 for a pint and a (little) glass of wine I would say thats whats killed the pub trade off.How many people could afford a night out at those prices?

the smokers have started going back in again so the club can now stay open
itchy does not smoke so he has no point in making it up. the club went downhill from the start of the smoking ban.
it is now back as it was.
