David Cameron tells us that the terrorist threat to Britain is "as serious as it has ever been".

/// He also suggests that Britain faces fundamental questions about why young Muslims continue to be drawn into violent extremism. The Islamic community must help address how their minds are "poisoned", he says. ///

Will the indigenous population sit up and take notice, let alone the moderate Islamic community?

Stay calm, don't panic?
If the risk is as serious as it has ever been he should raise the security threat level from Severe to Critical
I do think the Muslim community could do more, but I'm not sure what you expect the indigenous population to do, so I'm with vibrasphere. I'm up for helping, so what do we do?
<<Will it all fall on deaf ears?>>

Obviously not as we are discussing it here and I've also heard it on tv and radio,

What can we do?

Well we are constantly told by our politicians to be vigilant, but if this site is anything to go by, there is nothing to be concerned about, just keep our noses glued to the soaps and reality TV.
What could the 'moderate Islamic community' do?
Yes, Aog we should be vigilant. The public become compacent very quickly though. They soon start whinging when extra security measures are put in place. If a bag was left unattended at a railway station, I wonder how long it would be before anyone bothered to report it.

There is plenty they could do, as well you know it.
I doubt that. It may be an open secret who's preaching hate but the radicalisation and conspiracies go on covertly. Just like you and me, ordinary decent Muslims could do very little.
If hate preachers are able to radicalise covertly, then those listening to them must be either blind or stupid. Many ordinary Muslims know that people are being radicalised but they say nothing. Additionally, when books that teach that Jews are pigs and gays should be killed are used in some Islamic schools, which they are, ordinary decent Muslims could object in the strongest terms - but they don't. The Muslim population could do a lot - but it chooses not to.
the (alleged) Stockholm bomber was exposed by other members of the Luton mosque he attended for his 'distorted view' of Islam. Sounds like the moderate Islamic community are doing their bit.
What about withdrawing the troops and resources from Afghanistan to back up our internal and border security which reduces part of the motivation for radicalism. Or is this just siege mentality?
jno, according to all the news reports I saw - yes he was exposed for his distorted view of Islam - after the event. How very helpful! Horses and gates spring to mind.

I actually think moderate British Muslims are between the devil and the deep blue sea. They won't speak out for fear of being branded disloyal.
Isolationism might be a good idea seadogg and I am all for it, but what do we do about the enemy within?
Was it not the case that they threw him out of the mosque because of his views and then he went on to commit his crime in Sweden?
But as far as I'm aware they didn't take it that step further and report him to the authorities, Sandy.
Islamic Centre chairman Qadeer Baksh said: ‘The reason we didn’t take the Government money for the Preventing Violent Extremism scheme is that it requires us to inform on fellow Muslims.

‘I have never called the police or authorities on anyone.’
I suppose the elders of the mosque didn't want to hear his extreme political views. But the fact that he held such opinions wouldn't have been grounds for impeachment. Thats probably why they didn't report him.
