I must confess . . . I've been two-timing
Music first:
My brother once told me, "I have to say �no� to Yes". I was playing a newly released vinyl recording (remember those?) of "Going for the One", at the time. Perhaps is was the naked guy on the album cover that threw him but we'll let him be the judge of that.
The title song of the album, "Going for the One�, (which coincidently happens to be, "Going for the One�), is rather intense and I would not expect it to be everyone�s cup of tea. But it is nonetheless a great song for those not thus assaulted. Unfortunately Youtube audio quality (as usual) is far to inferior to do justice to a studio recording played on a good sound system. I imagine a good Yes concert would be a, �once in a lifetime experience�, but as live music goes I�m a firm believer in, �You had to be there!�
As a rule I prefer the mellow-ish-er music and the rest of the album qualifies while retaining the cerebrally intense quality I like the album for.
As a rule, I�ve always despised jazz and was gob smacked when someone categorised on of my favorite artists music as jazz.

Again I admonish you to withhold judgment until you�ve heard this on a good quality stereo. Steely Dan are studio recording perfectionist with many hidden subtleties which beg for serious listening. You may beg to differ and this is understandable under current circumstances which I only wish I could improve. Oh well . . . onward . . .

Just re-read the posts about trust, and come to the conclusion, Mibs, that you suffer from a mild form of paranoia.
To judiciously weigh up the cost benefits of placing your trust in somebody seems to me to be exhausting and lacking in spontaneity.
I am by nature, very trusting, and although I have been let down on many occasions through misplacing my trust, the huge benefits of being open and trusting far outweigh the risks, and as a result, life is not as tiresome as your calculating of human nature would suggest.
Forgive me if I have misunderstood you, but, I would suggest you loosen up a little and plunge in to relationships wherever you find them. Yes, occasionally you will get your fingers burned or get ripped off, and let down, but the vast majority of people would embrace your trust and reciprocate in like fashion.
Just a thought, and no offence intended.

I think you have something in suggesting Starman is perhaps a little paranoid, but I can't agree with your advice to him to plunge into relationships wherever he finds them. I think that would be disastrous. We have to be selective in our relationships, don't we?

I'm baaaaaaccck!!! Effing AB seems to have issues with Zappy's browser or something so I've had to change it round tonight but as a result I've missed out on readint the Science thread I started (can't really concentrate on stuff that requires my attention at work that isn't work) and a few other I had some pennies I wanted to contirbute.

I'm sure I'm over reacting.
Fact is I continue to invest a great deal of stock in trust at the cost of great insecurity . . . not so much in myself as in my relationships with others. I understand myself and others well enough but my struggles to be understood by others remains a constant challenge.
My only recourse is to persuade others to put themselves through what I found necessary to go through myself. On that front I have had only a smattering of success. But it's my own personal battle to win. No one is entitled to impose their will on others. Intellectual persuasion is the only justifiable and effective weapon of choice to win the minds of others. I do not seek blind obedience, nor do I demand it, from others or myself.
A vital and essential tool for healing the wounds inflicted on us by others in our vulnerable childhood is not to lash out against a reality that will not yield but to uncover the root of the cause and thereby rid the world once and for all of the effects. It is an ongoing never ending process but it is also the essence of growth and an intrinsic property of life.

Trust is not an inherent quality of life. Trust is a tool, instinctively used implicitly by animals and a choice for those with the capacity to reason. You have learned apparently to your satisfaction how to use this tool implicitly through the process of your upbringing. I did not.

I know where you're coming from insofar as that way in which your childhood experiences have affected you, but I have no idea whatsoever where you've landed and so you remain an enigma to me.
