This is a heart-breaking picture. What do our "righties" think ? Should we help these people or not ? This refugee crisis is now being talked about as the worst in Europe since WW2.

Surley we can do something? Even if its not "opening the floodgates" surley we can still help?? This breaks my heart- the horror. Id be on that boat trying to save my childs life if god forbid i was in that situation. There must be something our countries can do between us all to help. I work with a gentleman whos sister was planning on getting a boat she lives in...

There is no easy answer to this problem.
We need a dispassionate and unemotional approach to this whether by an Old Etonian or someone from the Comprehensive State education system.
Children die, murdered, mutilated, abused and pictures like this that we see should not colour or bias our approach to the situation.

It is utterly heartbreaking, and it encapsulates the horror and misery of this entire situation for the poor people involved.
Until world governments are willing to look at seriously re-distributing some of the world's wealth to prevent these scenarios, then we are doomed to keep watching people live - and die - through them.
Hint - what about parking the space programmes for a few decades?

Tragic yes, but people shouldnt be swayed by shock tactics of these pictures....
if we keep letting people in here , they will keep on coming in ever greater numbers, we are already seen as an easy touch, which we are without doubt....
there are plenty of other countries across the planet that could take people if they wanted to..africa has plenty of safe places, so why dont people look to go there ?
As it stands we are under attack and its no good letting every body that wants to come here in, no matter the reasons.
If people value their country then they need to stand against this invasion, and on here theres some who obviously couldnt care less about the country.

The people coming from Syria are fleeing a murderous war. We should do more to help them. Germany, for example, puts us to shame. They'll be taking more than 800,000 thousand refugees. How many Syrians have we accepted? A few thousand, I think.
Economic migrants are a very different matter. Do we really need curry chefs from the Indian sub continent? We should harden our hearts against them.

In the past when war/conflicts hit these countries, people's fled the war zones into their neighbouring countries and stayed there until it was safe to return to their homes.
Now, they want to risk the lives of their families and tiny children, not because they are fleeing conflict but, for a "better life."
Why?

TTT...this photo is on the front of most newspapers in Britain, and its a perfectly OK subject for debate. Is it really too much to ask that we can debate this subject without it degenerating into a slanging match ? The nearest some on here have come to expressing sympathy with this crisis, is to say that destroying ancient buildings makes them cry.
Most of these poor people are fleeing an appalling and savage civil war in Syria. It was reported today that ISIS is using chemical weapons, in the same way that the butcher Assad has done in the past, as his father did before him.
I believe we can do something. Germany has shown the way here by welcoming refugees, and I believe we in Britain can, and should do more.
