Do You Think I Should Dress Smart For A Interview At A Charity Shop

Only volunteering a few hours a week after work until I get a full time job. Got interview tomorrow

She says because she has to look after her parents dogs. However she still has her paid job at Selco. It would probably be helpful to Abbey if she saw how older people give their time to charity and maybe she could learn some life skills that might help her with her clothes, friends and dating and how to approach work and loyalty to a job

Abbey, charities rely heavily on volunteers, and if you can't - or won't - be reliable, best find something else.

Is it a bad thing if I work for an agency?

I agree Scorpio, having worked for Barnardo's twice on different occasions inbetween jobs in my early twenty's, it was respectful, I always dressed casually smart... even though I was more of a grunt working in the background... drop-offs sorting donations etc... unloading new stock, but always on time doing the bank run getting change for the shop etc..

However when actually asked to cover on the shop floor I was smartly dressed enough to do so.

I learnt a lot from the elder generation (my perspective at the time) I wish Abbey well in her endevours.

Work for an agency in what way? Actually working for one, or getting work via an agency?

Getting work via one. I've volunteered in a few other charity shops.

There's nothing wrong with agency work.

Going back to your 'Volunteer' work you need to be prepared to put in a hard days shift, and not winge about it, it can be very demanding but also gives great satisfaction knowing... Jobs done knowing your hearts in the right place.

There's nothing wrong with getting work through an agency , but can you rely on it being permanent?

Do you mean an employment agency (like Indeed or Reed) who match you with vacancies or being an agency worker where you are given a job be it in a shop, office, hospital whatever and it's the Agency who is your employer and not the place you're working in - these are usually temporary positions that companies bring in to fill gaps or short term demand?

abbey - quite a few people have mentioned to you how important it is to be reliable.  Do you understand how important it is and what 'reliable' really means? 

Employers aren't interested in the need to e.g. take time off to look after your parents' dog.  You are expected to sort these problems out for yourself, the job must come first (except in exceptional circumstances - such as a health emergency).  

I'm very serious, you need to understand this.  I'm certain that your attendance recod must be counting against you.

and 'attendance'...... I learned to touchtype on an old Imperial 'sit-up-and-beg' ----- computers can't cope with heavy hands hammering the keys.  🙄
