Yes Clerkenwell is in East London. Don't know your friends though.

They must be quite well-off!  Clerkenwell was rather a run-down commercial area until recent years, but now it has 'come up' with old warehouse/office buildings /flats/refurbished.  There are a lot of art galleries, swish new apartments, etc.  It's still got a unique character, just,  but it is much changed this last few years.  There was quite a large Italian community at one time.  Also, there was quite a number of printing/publishing houses, their buildings now converted or demolished. Only last week I saw another one gone down..  It isn't what you'd call a residential area.  It is quite near St. Paul's Cathedral.  Long ago it was the hotbed of political disturbances.

Hello Flaming and Netibiza;  thanks for responding , the folks I am speaking of  have long been residents of long island in NY. [edited by Answerbank - see Terms of Use #8]  they were quite active in show business,, however it was a few years ago.

Golem:  The bells and whistles worked.  Very interesting.  Presumably that's your film. It has just reminded me, too, that the Clerkenwell Road used to be a clock repair centre.
