Dear all
My colleague at work would like to know what the difference is between an Embassy and a Consulate - the best I could come up with was to say that I believed there was definitely a difference!! Any info would be appreciated - and please no cigarette comments! We've had all of those already...
Thanks
The following information is quoted direct from other sites:
The Embassy of one country is that countrys main diplomatic office that is physically located in another nation. Embassies are typically located only in national capital cities; most embassies in the U.S. are in Washington, DC.
A Consulate is any authorized diplomatic office of a country other than an embassy that is located within another country.
I think basically, the Embassy deals with the "PR" stuff like official visits of the respective Prime Ministers etc. whereas the Consulate deals with admin matters like giving visas to people of the host country to visit their own or assisting their own citizens in the host country.
Embassy - main gaff, usually sited in capital city.Consulate is a diplomatic office situated in another city different from the embassy. So the UK has an embassy in Washington D.C. and consulates in New York,San Francisco etc.The departments that deal with visas are called the chancery and are attached to Embassies and Consulates.Bernado - The UK's diplomatic missions in Commonwealth countries are called High Commissions.
hi , the embassy is a country'diplomatic office located in another country capital to deal with political and diplomatic relationships
a consulate of a country is located in cities where there is an important community of a country in another one to deal with all theire official papers as (birth or death certificate mariage, passeports etc)
