Think you're mistaken with that comment Goofy. I'm Church of Scotland and we are certainly acknowledging Lent. Don't deprive yourself of anything, but GIVE something.
I knew a vicar, later a bishop, who was a chain smoker. Every Lent he gave up smoking, and after the first Mass of Easter would devour 20 Player's in one go.
It is ingrained from childhood. The main idea is to mortify the flesh by giving up something and donating any money saved to good causes. It's basically the same as Ramadan, though much less strict.
You can also do something for Lent, some form of discipline, like going for a twenty minute walk every day. You don't have to give up anything, you can just add a discipline.
(So my very religious Catholic friend tells me. The one with the ash cross on her forehead, this evening)
As Tilly said you can do something for Lent, so I will be having a tipple every night!!! To me that is a discipline as it is not something I do on a regular basis.
I was once advised to give up worrying about the state of the world. It proved to be a good idea (quite difficult actually to live in the present) so I do that every year - it gets harder!
