I love this site... have been a member for far too long lol

I rarely post but am always here and as a vegan I am basically gobsmacked at times at peoples attitude towards my lifestyle choice and yes it is a choice. As is yours.

BUT [from the Vegan Society]

Veganism is a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose.

At 47 years of age [50 this year] I adopted the Vegan lifestyle because I became aware of the apathy and my own jaded sense of what is right and wrong. Right to kill a pig... but not a dog? blah blah blah

Have you ever watched any documentaries concerning veganism? Earthlings? Cowspiracy? What the health?

Do you know what cognitive dissonance is?

I'm not posting this to be confrontational, I am truley interested in what people think :)

Not veganism naomi, but vegeterianism and I'm starting tomorrow when I go shopping for food. I totally agree with andres, there is far too much suffering in the animal world, all down to us. How awful for them to know they are going to die.

Congrats XXX
Fanks :) xxx
And what about the way an animal dies? It is increasingly difficult to find non Halal meat. And my local farm shop couldn't even answer the question when I asked about the lamb (NOT NZ) on sale. I was told it was slaughtered at the local abattoir but the guy didn't know if that was Halal.
Out with mutt now so back to this later.
Congratulations from me too, cali. I wish you both a long and happy marriage. xx
Thanks Pasta, very happy x

That's very true Ladybirder, you really do have to research yourself nearly to death to get it a harm free as possible, but these folks are really helpful if you can't find a local non halal slaughter. x

I must say some people make me laugh, when they say they care about the animals welfare before being slaughtered and popped in the oven, its almost like they need an excuse to eat it, (I'm a meat eater)
No not at all Lydia, just don't do things in a crueller fashion than you need to eh? Good life mantra that...

Thank you for the link Cal. Very useful. I will be using them.
I am a meat eater but I appreciate divegirl's post. If I had to kill the food I eat I would probably become a vegetarian, albeit reluctantly.

Some of the responses here are a little unkind to the OP, imo. Accusing divegirl of preaching is going a bit too far. Can we not just accept that she is trying to put up a decent debate and has explained her view in a coherent and cogent way?

I would add that I have never been able to understand the argument for veganism - why should we not use honey and beeswax for example?

However, if this thread makes any of us think more about not eating animals or questioning the way in which animals are slaughtered then it has been a worthwhile exercise. How often have you wondered why so many animals escape from abattoirs? I shall remember for the rest of my days those terrible news pictures of animals burning during the foot and mouth outbreak in 2001.

Well done divegirl for standing up for your belief - not many on here have the backbone to do that in a civil manner when confronted by a strong opposition.

I don't want or need anyone to tell me what I should or shouldn't eat, that is my choice, she comes across as a typical Vegan, and most of them are preachers.
I understand that, Baldric. But it doesn't stop you from virtually telling others what TV to watch, now does it? Have a nice Sunday :)

Jog my memory, when did I do that?
"How often have you wondered why so many animals escape from abattoirs?"

I didn't know that so many did. But if they do it is because it is an animal's natural instinct to avoid confinement.
So Theland DIDN'T establish that meat-eating was approved by God?
"Then God blessed Noah and his sons, saying to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth. The fear and dread of you will fall upon all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air, upon every creature that moves along the ground, and upon all the fish of the sea; they are given into your hands. Everything that lives and moves will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything. “But you must not eat meat that has its lifeblood still in it. And for your lifeblood I will surely demand an accounting."
Genesis 9.1-5

God loved a barbeque!
It's obvious that God approved of us eating animals. If he had not he wouldn't have made them out of meat, would he?
