Driving home today I was listening to Jeremy Vine interviewing A J West about his new book, 'The Spirit Engineer', which examines, among other things, the reality or otherwise of the spirit world and the trickery used by charlatans to convince people that they are actually contacting the dearly departed. Mr West threw out a couple of 'cold' readings and asked listeners to phone in if they thought anything he said referred to them personally. I arrived home before anyone called so I've no idea of the outcome. Interesting nonetheless.

So … have you ever been tricked by a trickster - and when did you realise you had?

That you trying to have an intelligent conversation with someone with a closed mind Naomi - ooops.

TTT you're showing us party tricks, you'll wheel out Uri Geller next.
There was a poster up for a clairvoyants and forecasters of the future show up in Aberdeen a couple of years ago.I wanted to go,but couldnt because it was cancelled due to "unforeseen circumstances",duh.
"TTT you're showing us party tricks, you'll wheel out Uri Geller next. " - good choice, I expect you believed he was really bending cutlery with the power of his mind, nope, just a trick, like all the others.
You think I believed him?

How little you know of me.
Are you setting yourself up as the UK version of The Great Randi, TTT?

The Moderately Raised Libido? :-P
I do believe that some people have 'gifts' more than others and can sense things I personally think 'spooky' having had some experiences oneself.

But also don't believe in stand up "Medium" and "psychic" types and do think they're charlatans.

When I was a kid on Blackpool seafront, my uncle came around a corner of a "Psychic medium's" voodoo cabin and bumped into her with his cup of coffee, she was less than pleased and let him know.

To which he replied "if you were any good you would've seen me coming".
Apparently I was one of those children who saw and described dead people.... Scared the sh!! out of my family, only lasted a few years. I now have no belief in an afterlife, spirits, or similar but I do feel it might possible for some places to replay events like a kind of video playback

Sorry, a bit late but thanks to those who gave me pointers to catch up.
History is replete with the knowledge gained thanks to those who didn't shy away from controversy.
There are many hoaxers and con artists in the field of paranormal...I have my own paranormal investigation group and have travelled extensively researching activity ..I have experienced too much to dismiss the fact that something is there...I have many sound recordings..and have even been physically attacked by something unseen...

Any theories, minty?
I firmly believe that there is “something there”. In no way are people deluded as has been suggested. I have had experiences and I think one should have an open mind
not the de-bunking of James Randi article I was looking for, and I haven't read it all, but Mr Randi is also alleged to have done more harm into psychic research with his $1m dollar offering than anyone else.

my belief is that life=energy and when the body dies the energy is left and sometimes this energy manifests in an earthly form and remains around places it knew when on this life plane..sometimes it manifests as light anomalies...such as orbs..flashing lights..mists... or purely as an audible.. some spirit energies go off to other realms beyond our ken... there are people with skills that enable them to communicate with such spirit energies directly, and others, like myself, that are intrigued and develop methods and techniques to bridge the gap between planes on occasions in order to communicate.. often a troubled spirit just wants to leave a message before passing on to a higher plane..some just like to be in familiar places...we have much to learn..
as a footnote.. I had a fellow investigator visiting on Wednesday..whilst she was here a white feather just appeared on the floor between us..from nowhere...my cat balls flashed..I keep a wee ball or two lying around..they only flash if touched..this one is atop a cabinet well out of reach... this was whilst I was telling her that I had seen a figure reflected in my bedroom mirror walking past door into back room..and the bathroom light has been switching itself off and on in the last week
No never. Nor would I be. I do not believe the dead can be contacted.
We pass this way but once. And you're a long time dead. Dead is dead.
you will never believe unless you have a personal experience... I have had countless completely validated experiences over the years

Minty, thanks for your answers. I suspect that some of it must be related to some sort of residual energy, but occasionally things happen that even that doesn't explain. For example, I once got a musical 'message' - which was quite beautiful and very relevant to me at the time - recorded on my answerphone from a mobile that was definitely switched off.

I lived in a severely 'haunted' house - awful - I breathed a sigh of relief when we moved - so your recent experience in your house is intriguing. Do things like that always happen there or was this a first?
