When Does An 'Ordinary' Muslim Become An Extremist?

We're often told that there is a difference between 'ordinary' Muslims and extremists, so ignoring those who call for violence and Islamic domination as they march in support of Palestine, but thinking only of the Muslim school children and their parents and supporters who are making news by intimidating students into adopting the hijab, to observe Islamic fasting rituals, and to withdraw from some school activities because they are considered 'haram';   the student who is battling her school in court (at the taxpayers' expense) for the 'right' to pray during school hours, the protestors outside schools, causing one to close early in order to protect staff and pupils, and those who are threatening teachers to the extent that they fear travelling on public transport, one of whom is still, after a very long time, in hiding.   The people who are responsible for all of this carry on their regular everyday lives living among us.  Are they 'ordinary' Muslims - or are they extremists?

Redhelen, I'm not aware of another side so perhaps you should enlighten me.  How, for example, do you square your support for Islam with its abysmal treatment of women and homosexuals?

Mozz, I never have, and never will complain about the content and direction of any thread.

Nor am I ever rude to anyone who has not been rude to me first.

You had better get back to the topic, or you'll have the headmistress on your tail.

Question Author

Andy Hughes, is your wife a member here?

Naomi  - None of your business.

You don't share your private life on here, don't presume you can pry into mine.

Question Author

No problem, Andy Hughes.  Bearing in mind your wife's profession I was just curious at that headmistress comment.  Thought it rather derogatory really.  That's all.

Please don't try to be snart, it doesn't suit you, you know perfectly well what my post meant.

Derogatory? Well, we're in your area of expertise now.

Question Author

Andy Hughes. Just to move the conversation on perhaps you might like to have a go at answering my question at 15.38 to RedHelen?  I'm always willing to learn and that really is something I would like to understand.

^^ the usual response is that asking such questions is being 'racist'

Naomi - // Moving the conversation on ... //

Why, havebyou got tired of 'trashing' now, or is it only 'derailing' when someone else apart from you and your admirers, are doing it.

Question Author

Not a question you'd care to answer then, Andy Hughes.  Okay.

Khandro - Please don't presume to know what any of my responses to any questions might be.

And please don't presume that my thought processes are as narrow-minded and bigoted as yours, based on your one-track nonsense posted on here with tedious regularity.

Naomi  - If I care to answer, I'll do so in my own sweet time.

You don't get to dictate time frames for answers, any more than you get to dictate the direction of threads, which you are happy to follow when it suits you, and not when it doesn't.

I look forward to it whenever you decide.

Naomi  my link I gave to you in reply to your OP which you poo pooed  and  brushed away was very informative, but you knew better.

Quite honestly I gave up at that stage.

Helen is probably like a lot of us who have Moslem friends or Moslem families,  I have lived in  moslem area of  town, worked with many in a University, had a Moslem boyfriend., visited Muslim countries.  You are in my mind insulting thousands of people's intelligence  by assuming rhey will all turn to extremism.

No need to reply. But you always want the last word.

I will reply lottie, because you deliberately misrepresenting me.  There is no assumption that 'they will all turn to extremism' - that is a useful figment of your imagination that suits your purpose.

CL : //..You are in my mind insulting thousands of people's intelligence  by assuming rhey will all turn to extremism.//

That isn't the issue, please see my above post at 15:38.

Khandro - Answering questions addressed your cohorts is taking hero worship a bit far!

Calm down and have a cup of tea why don't you...

Question Author

No mention of the millions of women and homosexuals Islam is insulting - and worse.  I really would like someone to tell me how they square their support for Islam with that.

You are wrong Naomi.  Your question clearly asks when does an ordinary Moslem go on to becomeam an extremist. That implies there are ordinary moslems, but it also implies that there is a time when the will go on to be a Islamic extremist.  You then list instances of those who have.  Do you feel they represent all moslems.  I post a link to a very sensible article actually answering your question.  Not all moslrms are Islamists or follow Islamic traditions.  And not all islamics are extremist. Far from it.

And  now I can't find my link!
