When Does An 'Ordinary' Muslim Become An Extremist?

We're often told that there is a difference between 'ordinary' Muslims and extremists, so ignoring those who call for violence and Islamic domination as they march in support of Palestine, but thinking only of the Muslim school children and their parents and supporters who are making news by intimidating students into adopting the hijab, to observe Islamic fasting rituals, and to withdraw from some school activities because they are considered 'haram';   the student who is battling her school in court (at the taxpayers' expense) for the 'right' to pray during school hours, the protestors outside schools, causing one to close early in order to protect staff and pupils, and those who are threatening teachers to the extent that they fear travelling on public transport, one of whom is still, after a very long time, in hiding.   The people who are responsible for all of this carry on their regular everyday lives living among us.  Are they 'ordinary' Muslims - or are they extremists?

You're not funny Andy.  You're being a bully.

Good - I'm not trying to be. I regard people trying to deride contributions simply bcause they don't like them as a serious issue.

// You're being a bully. //

I'm sorry you feel that way.

Obviously I disagree.

If any of my fellow Moderators feel my posts are not in line with Site Rules, they will act accordingly.

If you feel sufficiently strongly about my posts, then the right of reporting is available to you.

LB, you're actually reading all that?  Blimey!  Your patience is admirable.  😂

Over the years I've seen so many good threads derailed by Andy Hughes.

naomi - // LB, you're actually reading all that?  Blimey!  Your patience is admirable.  😂 //

This thread is 'trashed' - what are you doing here?

Khandro - // Over the years I've seen so many good threads derailed by Andy Hughes.  //

No, you have seen many good threads that have changed direction to something that was not to your taste, and that happens all the time.

It is simply not possible for one person to 'derail' a thread, that's not how it works.

People exchange views, opinions, and information.

As long as people are continuing to do so, the thread is active, and when they stop, it stops.

No one single individual controls the course of a thread, so the power with which you invest me simply does not exist.

Threads go where contributors take them - that's contributors plural, because if only one person is posting - you appear to think that must be me, then the thread will simply stop, since no-one posts replies to themselves.

Any and all threads I have been on, including this one, last as long as anyone has something to say on it, and then it will stop.

You are continuing the thread.

If you feel it is is 'derailed', then you won't have anything further to add, will you.

Sleep well.

In between watching the Miners' Strike on CH4 Naomi.  I remember it well.

I hate being told what I/we already know over and over again like we're all idiots except him..

Strange how this thread has been allowed to explode way out of control, yet many many other threads and answers have been shut down for a lot less?

If your post is aimed at me, I don't understand the point you are making,

I address points in response to posts.

If someone posts the same thing that I have already responded to, then they naturally get the same response.

I don't think that's unreasonable - it only takes seconds to read any of my posts, so hardly a huge waste of your time if it's something you've read previously.

Best ignored and taken for what it is, LB.  It speaks volumes ... and not in a good way.  ;o)

I've recorded The Traitors so that's me sorted for the rest of the evening.   Have a nice night. X

At the risk of sounding like a cracked record, threads don't 'explode', or become 'out of control'.

The thread goes the way all threads go, the way the contributors wish to take it.

Threads very often, in fact more often than not, evolve away from their original premise, that's the nature of discussion.

But they all consist of a point of view or information, and a response by one or other persons.

There is no 'explosion' or 'control', or other rather overheated hyperbolic adjectives.

If a thread interests or amuses, or entertains, or educates, or even exasperates you, stick around, and contribute if you wish, not if you don't.

If it does none of those, you don't have to stay, you can look elsewhere.

But simply popping up late in the game to give some unhelpful nonsense about 'control' and 'explosions' adds nothing.

But that's your right - and mine, and everyone's.

It's how the site works.

Still need the last word don't you, even on a 'trashed' thread!!!

I've lost count of how many times posts have been removed because we are told to adhere to the subject / OP. I've also lost count of posts being removed because of abusive / rude remarks. But it appears moderators can dismiss those rules at will.

I and my fellow Moderators are subject to Site Rules in exactly the same way as everyone else.

And the Report function as well.

If you feel anything I have said contravenes Site Rules, you are at liberty to report to the Editor who will adjudicate accordingly.

There is no favouritsim on the site, despite the perpetual moaning of a disgruntled few.

Jourdain, hopefully we can now get this thread back on track.  I respect your long experience and value your opinions so if you're feeling up to it I would really appreciate your thoughts.

Back on track?

It's 'derailed', 'exploded', 'trashed' whatever, so surely you don't want to waste your time do you?

Oh, hang on, if people are posting, then the thread is active, just like I said.

Fancy that.

But you are only interested in people posting if they adhere to your way of thinking.

anyone else is belittled or ignored

^^  👍

Redhelen - If you re-read my posts, I believe I argue points and responses put to me.

If you care to point out where I have 'belittled' anyone, I am happy to discuss it.

As for 'ignoring' - I am not mandated to respond to each and every post if I choose not to engage with it.

AH you misunderstood - I am not talking about you but the OP and others with her mindset
