Is Anyone Here "between" Religions?
137 Answers
I was asked the other day what religion i am and i had to pause because i was "between" religions so was temporarily religionless.
So far i've tried christianity, judaisam, buddism and islam but i was left baffled, confused, empty and dismayed by the hypocritical nature of these paths.
I still haven't found what i'm looking for in a religion which is the truth. I've had a look at scientology but this appears to be a far out cult.
At the moment i am between religions, yes i believe that we were created by god, gods or even aliens and i want and demand the truth.
What can i do and where do i search for the truth? Can anyone here hand on heart recommend a religion to me as the emptiness and the fact that i could be missing out on enlightenment is killing me.
Thank you humbly in advance.

Unable to contribute, why do you have such a strong need to insert your personal views when you lack and negate all religion comprehensively?
If some one asked a question, say in the Gardening section, and supposing you don't like gardening and it is on a subject which you could not answer anyway, would you suggest that they give up on gardening because you don't see any point in it?

That's a bad analogy, Khandro -- if someone is trying to garden the wrong way then others have every right to say so. Atheism is just as much a form of "gardening" as any religion.
OP is about what religion to try -- well, if none of them suits him there is another alternative, and atheism has much to recommend it.

Zombozo, you are making too many assumptions, It is no good looking for a creator, if there isn't one you will be disappointed. Since all this religious stuff hangs on the existence of a creator perhaps you should check out whether a creator exists or existed before you go any further. Enlightenment is unattainable just like perfection or infinity. For most people 'good enough' works quite well. You could seek enlightenment at the risk of ignoring more relevant things. Perhaps your 'emptiness' is symptomatic of some other kind of unfulfilled need.
If you were born male and into a high class, choose hinduism. If you are poor or a woman, don't. Hinduism believes that if you are born into a fortunate male body, you deserved it after leading a good previous life. If you are a poor woman, you deserved to be that, too, because of all the evils you committed in your past lives. Hinduism is the only religion I know of which has a total answer to the problem of evil. And which elevates men ( men alone) to the position of potential gods.
Guess whether it was men or women who invented Hinduism ?

There are many religions to look at, the fact that you have been struggling to find the path which suits you perhaps suggests that a monotheistic religion is not for you. Have you considered any of the polytheistic religions. I found that this was the best option for me and whilst I am still searching for my exact path I am happy that there is a religion there which allows me the freedom to express my own beliefs. I do not know where you are from, but perhaps if you search for some of the beliefs linked to your local area maybe something will resonate.
Good luck and I hope you find the path which is meant for you. Sometimes its a long journey and there are times when we all feel a bit lost. Don't try and force a belief in something, it will come in time if it is meant to be.

Khandro - To take your analogy. I see the garden as a place where wonder happens but there are weeds that will stifle the growth of the plants and flowers and turn the garden into a mass of green nothingness.
Substitute religion for weeds and you will see that I am saying religion stifles intellect and human growth and advancement.
So I would advise the OP to get rid of all the weeds. Thank you.

who am I ? Where do I come from and where do I go when I die
are very reasonable questions,
and are asked more as we get older.
Clearly you are zomboso'd so far as religions are concerned and there arent very many more to whizz thro - Sikh, Zoaraster, and then you are down to the really carzy ones
You have been a betweenie so far, four times, Most of us stick with one and then if it doesnt fit, give up.
Honestly I dont think you have spent long enough on one,
let alone four
and perhaps it is time to recycle - I would start at Christianity (II) let us say and then if that still rubs, Islam (II). Sort 0f buy the book and this time read it.

Khandro - To your statement //If some one asked a question, say in the Gardening section, and supposing you don't like gardening and it is on a subject which you could not answer anyway//
Once again you make an assumption for which you have no evidence.
The fact that I don't like religion does not preclude me from knowledge of religion.
It would be irrational to form a dislike of something without having investigated to see what it is you actually dislike.

//why do you have such a strong need to insert your personal views when you lack and negate all religion comprehensively? //
The reason I 'lack and negate all religion comprehensively' is precisely because I have studied it, I do have knowledge of it, and I have therefore, made an informed choice. I would not, however, consider giving advice on gardening which I know very little about.

What a shame so much of our lives must be devoted to refuting the arbitrary and often destructive and debilitating claims of religion and other such mind-numbing assertions, time that would otherwise have been available for finding substantive meaningful answers to life's burning questions . . . or gardening.
Zombozo...Have you tried paganism ? Its supposed to be wonderful. You don't have to go to church and you get lots more sex apparently. You might have to grow your hair into matted lumps however, and live in a converted ambulance, so its not a complete bundle of fun.......just think of all that itching !
naomi; You say you have studied (some?) religion, and on that basis have rejected all religion. Therefore religion to you is an irrelevance, and yet when someone asks a specific comparative-religious question you (and others) feel the need to assert your irreligious beliefs.
Why is this any different from telling someone to give up gardening when they ask a specific question on that subject because, as you say, you know little about it and are disinterested?
People that don't like gardening don't seem to tell those that do, that they are wrong to be actively involved in it, and nobody is telling you what you should think.
