Since moving to a high rise with limited access, I no longer get the religious door knockers/God Gang trying to sell me Jesus. Pity really as I used to enjoy trying to engage them in conversation and watching them back up the path as I quoted chapter and verse back at them..
(As an ex evangelical, it NEVER leaves you)
Most of the time I actually had a desire to debate/learn/exchange ideas with them but the feeling was not mutual...they just wanted to convert people and had no interest in other points of view.
I was never one for shutting the door in the face of someone who believed that they were doing good. Much rather have a mutual conversation.
However one afternoon we had a family gathering at my mums when the JW's were doing the rounds. I was sent to the door to see them off.
I politely asked them if they could come back the following week as we were in the middle of an occultic rite and were about to sacrifice a cockerel.
They actually apologised for disturbing us (at an OAP's bungalow) and promised to return the following week
(never did return. EVER)

Strange that! They promised as well.
Any stories re God Gang Door Knockers?

I am afraid I am not as welcoming as you Nailit!!
Once I had been to the shops on my return walking down my path I saw them at my door. As I approached I said to them let me get in & put down my shopping & I'll come back to talk. Once in through the door, I slammed it shut & ignored their repeated knocking.
Yes, there was an awkward moment I answered the door to one, I'd dated him a couple of years previous.
We are Catholics and Jehovah's witnesses kept on coming to our front door and we were all fed up so one day I opened the door to them and shouted bog off my mummy's a Catholic and they have never returned.
My experience
Knock Knock
who's there?
Jehovah's Witnesses
me: Never even saw the accident
Bye.
Many years ago when an election was coming up, I was hoping some party members would knock on my door so I could grill them about something I wanted changing. I never answer my door if I'm not expecting anyone. However someone did knock on my door and hoping it was election canvassers, I answered it, only to be confronted by JW's. I quickly explained to them that I only answered the door as I was expecting election canvassers whereupon the elderly woman with them said to me that they can talk to me about the election !! I find they don't give up easily, but I did say no thanks and shut the door ..
Tenacious indeed. They have been visiting our house for forty five years. They have converted zero people.
No good deed goes unpunished.
There's a song about that... :))

nailit I should go very careful you're becoming biased. You love saying about JWs, but in many cases, where's your proof?

//They actually apologised for disturbing us (at an OAP's bungalow) and promised to return the following week
(never did return. EVER)//

They probably did return but either no one was home or they did not answer the door.
And if it was me I wouldn't want return with your attitude.

Musictv2019// shouted bog off my mummy's a Catholic and they have never returned.//
They probably did but you're not home or don't answer the door.

Burley Shirley //said to me that they can talk to me about the election !//
As a Jehovah's Witness, and the greater majority of JWs will not discuss politics. Jesus' said his followers were no part of the world.( JOHN 17:16.)
This is a site you can look at JW.org tell you what we do and don't do.

David small (They have converted zero people.)

It is estimated about 5000 a weeks get baptize.
That's the thing about estimates...
Atheist
they were mormon missionaries - harmless
in the good old days of lodgings, when I was a lab rt at Porton, we had two of them, one teacher ( of bilding) a navvie, and driver

cash only - the lodgings were - £7 a week, extra for a bath 1/-
I mean they dont exist now do they?
Some years ago two JW.s knocked on my door and asked if they could come in and read the bible.I said yes provided that they kept their voices down as I was watching the telly. They beat a hasty retreat.
Ok the Total Number Baptized: 241,994 for 2020

When we contact people from door to door, we encounter a variety of reactions to our message. Some householders are receptive, others are indifferent, and a few may be argumentative or belligeren, we are reminded that we are not seeking to “‘win arguments’ with people who show no respect for the truth.

If the householder is hostile, it is best for us to take our leave. We should never antagonize people by insisting that they talk with us or accept our point of view. We do not force our message on people. That would not be reasonable and could cause problems for other Witnesses and for the work in general.
\\ we are reminded that we are not seeking to “‘win arguments’ with people who show no respect for the truth.//
Therein lies the problem, you are not presenting the truth, only supposition.
When I was a teacher one of the saddest sights was that of children of JWs sitting outside the headmaster's study reading a book because their parents would not allow them to go to the Xmas party. They sat there listening to all the other children having a good time in the school hall.
I really do not understand the need to be rude or amuse one's self at their expense. surely its not difficult to say no thank you and shut the door?
oh we were in the gardine having sarndwiches and tea
and they came bothering
with an eight y old to watch the miracle of conversion

we kicked off with Bible as a translation ( they had already batted off Eclogue 4, is a Latin poem by Virgil. ... Medieval scholars thus claimed that Virgil had predicted Christ prior to his birth, and therefore must have been a pre-Christian prophet.)
and if it were, then what was eli eli lama sabacthani doing there?
It should have been translated.
and onto whether the parables were literally true
( they had gone froo and rejected da prodigal daughter then the prodigal twins and then the prodigal ....as unusable)

and the child was led away .....

and we went onto my fave - - koine greek
( before they surrendered - well we agreed to differ)
JW
as soon as they say the NT is a greek translation of a lost written aramaic original - there is very little left to discuss

because everything boils down to - - - it is in the lost original
How do they know what's in a lost book which no-one can read?
Jackdaw - I had the same experience when I was a school secretary at a junior school. One girl was not allowed to go into Assembly because her parents were JWs. So she missed all the information which was given out then, plus the lovely feeling when all the children are singing together. I felt desperately sorry for her. A friend of mine was a vicar and he always said that the part of the bible they refer specifically to had been mistranslated from the original Greek. I think they suffer from a form of brainwashing - that's my opinion - others will no doubt disagree.
JOhn
ἐκ τοῦ κόσμου οὐκ εἰσὶν καθὼς ἐγὼ οὐκ εἰμὶ ἐκ τοῦ κόσμου.

out of the world they are not just as I am not out ( from ) he world

and the commentaries say that is - dont pray for sweeties and pay rises as the Kingdom of God is about troof

and is NOT about conversion for which I wd say - go out and proselytise is a better quote

[yeah NT as a little bit of this and a little bit of that - yeah I know)
