Quite obviously, all you lovely law abiding atheists don't have a problem leading good upright lives in the absence of such authority. But, your position is compromised when it comnes to issues such as abortion. You have to reason these kind of things out, rather than rely on a moral authority.
Well, that's roughly what I'm trying to say.

This goes back to the old conundrum, of where did all of the "stuff" come from?
In my wildest dreams, I cannot even begin to speculate how it all came about, IF God is taken out of the equation.
No ASH has ever been able to point me in a direction that even looks promising, and to simply await science to come up with an answer, well, that is simply faith. Isn't it?

atheists aren't necessarily pro-abortion; religious people aren't necessarily anti-abortion. I don't know of anything in the Bible that prohibits abortion (though people may be able to find some quote to show I'm wrong on this one); some branches of the church may do so, but that's not the same as saying that 'religion does' or 'religion doesn't'.
On the other hand, the Bible definitely bans the eating of shellfish (Leviticus 10). Atheists go ahead and do it anyway, but I suppose you don't?

Israels success is demonstrated in all sorts of ways.
Compare its success in Nobel prizes compared to Arab nations, and compare the difference in population numbers. Added to that, Israel has negligable natural resources.
But, whatever they put their hand to, bears fruit. A nation truly blessed.
Regarding the treatment of the Palestinian people, well that is a huge subject and one i'm prepared to talk about, but, in a nutshell, they don't have to apologise for existing, and especially to neighbours who are sworn to their destruction.

Slavery is wrong Waldo. However in different times under different circumstances, it has been accepted, for example as a token of victory over a defeated enemy. And there are of course other examples, as you well know. But, Waldo, I can sense you lining me up for a knockout punch!
C'mon. Get it over with.

And your moral authority is the bible which condones stoning to death disobedient children, adulterers (naomi take note), homosexuals, and followers of other religions. the source of your morality says that slavery is desirable and that you shouldnt wear clothing made of different types of substances. It says that stealing is wrong (except when stealing from your enemies), murder is wrong (except when killing your enemies) and adultery is wrong (except when taking the virgins for themselves of conquered tribes...how did they KNOW they were virgins ?)...

The Bible is entirely okay with the notion of killing the unborn, jno:
If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman's husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life. - Exodus 21:22-23 (i.e. the death of an unborn child is not murder)
Tamar thy daughter in law hath played the harlot; and also, behold, she is with child by ********. And Judah said, Bring her forth, and let her be burnt. - Genesis 38:24
(It's okay to kill unborn children)
Samaria shall become desolate; for she hath rebelled against her God: they shall fall by the sword: their infants shall be dashed in pieces, and their women with child shall be ripped up. - Hosea 13:16
(that's God speaking)

Glad to see the most explicit of the B&S posts have gone.
Not all religions have scriptures, Theland, and those that do often contradict themselves internally. The Bible is a good case in point: a firebreathing Old Testament (as quoted on this thread already; Leviticus is particularly alarming) contrasts with a much more humane New Testament. God in the OT wants harsh punishment for adulterers. Jesus in the NT doesn't actually overrule this, he just suggests that the punishment should only be carried out by someone who is without sin. So someone who looks to the Bible for guidance can either take the quotation he wants and ignore the rest; or he can admit that the guidance is contradictory and unclear... either way, he'll have to make up his own mind, the same as atheists do.

And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every man child in your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any stranger, which is not of thy seed. He that is born in thy house, and he that is bought with thy money, must needs be circumcised. Genesis 17:12:
The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, "These are the regulations for the Passover: No foreigner is to eat of it. Any slave you have bought may eat of it after you have circumcised him, but a temporary resident and a hired worker may not eat of it. - Exodus 12:43
Now these are the ordinances which you shall set before them. When you buy a Hebrew slave, he shall serve six years, and in the seventh he shall go out free, for nothing. If he comes in single, he shall go out single; if he comes in married, then his wife shall go out with him. If his master gives him a wife and she bears him sons or daughters, the wife and her children shall be her master's and he shall go out alone. But if the slave plainly says, 'I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free,' then his master shall bring him to God, and he shall bring him to the door or the doorpost; and his master shall bore his ear through with an awl; and he shall serve him for life. - Exodus 21:1
If a man beats his male or female slave with a rod and the slave dies as a direct result, he must be punished, but he is not to be punished if the slave gets up after a day or two, since the slave is his property. - Exodus 21:20
If the bull gores a male or female slave, the owner must pay thirty shekels of silver to the master of the slave, and the bull must be stoned. - Exodus 21:32
Bid slaves to be submissive to their masters and to give satisfaction in every respect; they are not to be refractory, nor to pilfer, but to show entire and true fidelity. - Titus, 2:9
I'd appreciate chapter and verse where it says that
