Hi Craft,we are coming to York tomorrow and if we have time I would like to look up some dead relatives!They lived in Caroline Street,do you know which church yard they are likely to be buried in?

Craft doesn't seem to be around, so I hope you won't mind me posting.

Caroline Street no longer exists but a bit of googling found a reference to it having an intersection with Clement Street. That, in turn, is now a small cul-de-sac off Nunnery Lane, shown here:

Entering the postcode for Clement Street into the 'A Church Near You' website suggests that it's in the Parish of St Clement with St Mary (although, strangely, St Clement's Church doesn't appear to be within actual the parish boundary):

Hi Polly

A very good answer from Chris, a lot of churches in York have been demolished. The following website may be of help as Caroline Street is not actually that far away from York Cemetery, so they may not be in a churchyard.

I'm not doubting what Chris has put but I'm surprised that Caroline Street was in Clementhorpe as most of the streets with a name in the title were in the Walmgate area e.g. Thomas Street, James Street etc which came under the Parish Church of St Lawrence.
Have you not got a census showing what parish they were in?

It looks like St Clement is right,i have the 1911 census here which shows William Pollard born St Clements 1873.There were also marriages at All Saints Pavement and St Marys Bishops hill .Williams father and Grandfather both became Freemen of York.I had a look on the History on line and found that their was a Pollard (with variations in the spelling)during the reign of every monarch from Henry the 4th to Edward the 7th,so that was very interesting.
