First Television set.
I'm trying to work out which year we got our first television set.
All I know is that my Dad bought it because there was a special match when Manchester United were playing.Might have been a cup final and was definitely in the 1950's.
Any help please?

Like thousands of other folk - we got ours for the Queen's Coronation......LOL
It was a console model - with sliding doors as none of us were convinced we would ever get so used to the "big blank eye" staring at us from the corner of the room!! Can't remember the make - but it would have been British.

This is the one we had in the mid 50's. http:// objectw iki.sci ...visi on_Mode l_VT4.h tml
It came with a miniature plastic copy of the TV which was a money box. Mum used to put her spare threepenny bits in it to help pay for holidays.

We had a tv just before the wedding of the then Princess Elizabeth in 1947 and about twenty people crowded into our small front room in Stockwell, London to watch what was one of the very first outside broadcasts. It was a consul model EKCO (Maker E. K. Cole) and stood about 3 feet from the floor and had an 8 inch screen for which my parents subsequently purchased a magnifying attachment which hung over the front of the screen held by two straps fixed at the rear to enlarge the picture to about 11 inches. The picture either way was pretty awful and the first tv programme I ever watched was featuring the calypso bandleader Edmundo Ros. In those days the programmes generally commenced at about 8pm and closed at 10pm after which there was the news (sound only).
We had a TV which was a circa 1937 model. It was in a large cabinet about 3 foot high by 3 foot 6 wide, with a rising lid.The gun for the tube was so long that the tube could not be fitted so that the screen faced into the room. Instead, the screen pointed to the ceiling. This problem was overcome by mounting a mirror in the lid at 45 degrees, reflecting the image into the room. Somehow the makers had the screen showing a mirror image, so it was seen as correct when reflected.
But it was a big screen. It was a twelve inch screen! And it had an inbuilt radio with push buttons for stations such as Hilversum.

We got our first TV in 1961 - we were quite behind the times, but my dad wouldn't get one earlier because we were studying and he thought it would distract us. Prior to that, we had to go next door, I distinctly remember watching Champion the Wonder Horse (and spilling orange juice on the lady next door's new white rug.....)
My dad used to rent the old Bakelite radio from (surprise) Radio Rentals, so I think he might have done the same with the TV.
We rented first when I got married in 1971, if you rented a big telly (about 16 ins in those days!) you got a portable free, but you had to give them both back if you stopped renting.

Well I was born in 1957 and although I don't remember the exact date, I do remember the telly arriving around 1963. It was covered in parchment coloured vinyl with two knobs on the right side. One was a tuneable wheel and one was a klunk klunk channel selector. The on/off rocker switch was below the two knobs. It resembles the one in the photo. Man U played Watford in the FA Cup 28 Jan 1950, Played Bolton Wanderers FA Cup 3 May 1958 , I 'googled' so could be around there, I was born in 1952 and grew up with the TV in the corner, was told when I was about 4/5 that the set was my parents third one, I think it was rented from 'Wigfalls' in Leicester, at that time we were the only house in our street that had one. Hope this is of use
Sorry can't help you there. I remember ours was a Bush Black and White with just BBC and ITV. 2 knobs = 0n/0ff/Volume and Channel 1-10 but you need 1 for BBC and 3 for ITV.
First programme on it was Robin Hood with Richard Greene in Black and White with no sound because the engineer had to come back the next day. Remember the man on the roof fiddling with the ariel whilst my Dad shouting out the living room window when it was or not a good picture and this would be 55 years ago.
