Avast Blocking My External Hard Drive
My Avast demanded to be updated yesterday, so I did. Now when I plug my external hard drive in (a little Maxell portable) nothing comes up and I can't back things up. I assume these two events are connected as there was no trouble till today.
Is there any way to tell Avast to permit it? Or of restoring the earlier Avast? (Though I assume the latter would be risky.)
(Please don't advise installing MSE instead as I had the same trouble with it in the past; that's why I installed Avast in the first place.)

I use up-to-date Avast on W8.1 and don't have this problem. If you right-click the Avast icon in the task tray you'll find the 'Avast Shield Controls' where you can disable it for a period - see if the drive is recognised when Avast is disabled. I suspect it won't make a difference.

just decamping to Greece in a couple of weeks, Shaney - at the moment it even looks as if the weather may be fine, but I'll believe it when I see it. The house buying is further afield. Just another drab day here. Apparently you northerners might get to see the Northern Lights tonight, if there's any sky for them to appear in.
Good day all. Same old same old here. Sweaty and drippy!! 27°. Would be bearable without the humidity. Just eaten sweet anis flavoured tortillas and smoked sheep's cheese. We like different tastes and it was interesting and nice. Hes now dozing loudly! Ive swept patio, contemplating whether to swim or not, its such a bother!!!
I know, neti, we went down to see the Dunkirk little ships on the Thames today and took a ferry back up river, and I wondered if they were going to ask for my passport.
One of the little ships (not one of those on display today, it died a long time ago) was my f-i-l's. He didn't take it to Duinkirk himself, the navy took it over, which was the case with most of them. Only a very few film stars took their own boats. I was watching Mrs Miniver the other day, and Walter Pidgeon was one of them. I wonder if he met Mark Rylance in the channel.

Just waiting for the dishwasher to finish chugging so thought I'd post a couple of pics .Lovely sunset on the river and the tall ship that came in for the maritime festival which is on at the moment .

Shaney, one of the little ships was also in the film of Dunkirk (this year's one, not the John Mills one that was directed by Barry Norman's dad). It wasn't the one in the lead role, though. One of them was actually around during WW1 as well though it wasn't required to perform ferry duty until WW2.
Nice photos, is that yellow thing what they call the sun?

Nice pics shaney. There was one like that in Ibiza port. It's a Dutch training ship, loads of masts and riggings.
Keep fingers crossed for my friends in Deerfield Beach hotel Fla.
Hija met us at a restaurant and we had a paella, my first in ages. Very nice but I can't eat that much anymore. Just realised it's not that sticky today.

It's been very autumnal today ,cool and cloudy .I've put the winter duvet on and am wearing a thick cardigan.I've spent most of the late afternoon and evening stuck the sofa.
Talking of films we're supposed to be getting a cinema in the High St.There were two at one time but one was demolished to become shops and the other one was turned into a bingo hall. It's a lovely art deco building. The man with the vision to turn it back to a cinema already runs a quite successful one in Felixstowe. So there's hope for flicks in the sticks yet.
I have friends in Houston Neti .They live in Cypress. They're are ok though.I hope your friends will be alright. It's awful isn't it.We really shouldn't moan about our weather when you see that lot.
Have a good night all.

it is Totally Thames festival all month, which is why the little ships were round; they also had the great river race on Saturday, but that's a bit boring to watch; every 10 minutes you get someone coming by in a kayak or longship or bathtub or something, so we didn't bother. So today we went on a reedbed excursion in a barge looking at how they're planting reeds by the side of the Lea Navigation, mostly floating ones on coir mats. It's done by a conservation outfit called Thames 21. The only thing that confuses me is the Lea isn't the Thames. And in fact the Lea Navigation isn't the Lea, it's a canalised bit running alongside it, only straighter, so barges can get along it.
Also, nobody's ever decided whether it's the Lea or the Lee. Funny place, the East End.

I've just had to dash out and get my washing in.Not much chance of getting stuff bone dry outside here atm and it's not all that warm either.
We usually get some nice days in September but it doesn't look like it this year looking at the long range forecast.
They've been doing that sort of thing here on the Broads Jno.
They reckon the wash from all the boats was affecting parts of the banks so they brought in a speed reduction and also grow the reeds on some type of matting instead of putting piling in, so it looks more natural. It only takes a short while for the reeds to establish themselves.

Evenin shipmates...nothing interesting to report I'm afraid.
Lovely pics shaney, we'll need a ship to get to the shops soon, it's wild, wet, windy with occasional short sunny spells here. I agree, tis a bit chilly for Sept, I don't know who first forecast an Indian summer but they need firing, tut.
Might as well move the summery clothes to the back and shake the moths out of the thermals. It's very sad when you've got a best fleece top. :)

shaney, they prefer portable reedbeds to "real" ones as the latter just spread and start to narrow the channels. They have little orange barriers along them to stop rubbish getting in but it didn't seem to be doing all that well. They found lots of supermarket trolleys and Boris bikes there this year, thanks to the careless folk of Bromley by Bow.
Very stormy here these last couple of hours, wind howling, rain pelting down, it's like north London's own little Irma la douce.
How nice to have predictive text that moves you into a hotel.

Haha Jno .I don't think there are any Boris bikes in the broads ,at least I hope not .We don't need him and his vanity projects round here :)
It's very chilly tonight but I'm not putting the heating on in September.
That's just reminded me Robinia that I bought a nice fleece jacket in M&S last year, grey and black animal print.I've only worn it once and was keeping it for best.I never go anywhere to wear best things though.I'll have to start dressing up to clean the lavs or I'll never get the wear out of the stuff. My tiaras are getting a bit tarnished too :)
I watched the two new progs for Monday nights ,Rellik and Liar. Both quite good.
