Avast Blocking My External Hard Drive
My Avast demanded to be updated yesterday, so I did. Now when I plug my external hard drive in (a little Maxell portable) nothing comes up and I can't back things up. I assume these two events are connected as there was no trouble till today.
Is there any way to tell Avast to permit it? Or of restoring the earlier Avast? (Though I assume the latter would be risky.)
(Please don't advise installing MSE instead as I had the same trouble with it in the past; that's why I installed Avast in the first place.)

I use up-to-date Avast on W8.1 and don't have this problem. If you right-click the Avast icon in the task tray you'll find the 'Avast Shield Controls' where you can disable it for a period - see if the drive is recognised when Avast is disabled. I suspect it won't make a difference.

I'm so sorry to hear that Jno .Must have been a bit frightening for you. I hope your OH is feeling a bit better today though. At least you know what it it is and can get the right treatment. Best wishes to OH for a speedy recovery.
Dull old day here again but not quite so chilly.
Hope the rest of you are all Ok.

goodness JNO I will add your OH to my prayers...as you say a diagnosis is good and also there are worse ones. We are enjoying, and I mean enjoying, dull normality here. Dogs are having a sleepy day and are (touching wood) the best of friends again. Shughys grazes are healing and his stomach seems fine again. I am online christmas shopping.
Afternoon all....so sorry to read that jno. Hope your OH feels better after the transfusion and makes a speedy recovery. That happened to my grandad and he was fine following treatment.
It's slightly less cold today so I tottered to the shops...came back with a trolley full of cakes and biscuits and a tub of multivitamins for the over...erm...25s. That's my idea of a healthy diet.

thank you all, I have had some phone calls, OH is sounding a lot chirpier - that's what being full of someone else's blood does for you - and is going for an X-ray and some sort of oscopy. I think the idea is to be home tonight though of course that may not be the hospital's idea.
It's actually sort of sunny and mild out there, even in November.

Oops you've all started without Me!
Ok I sorry for OH I am a universal donor if you need me, except there are no planes now! Hope OH is improving.
Lovely day here. It's a fiesta ALL saints day. Met gbf for a coffee as we haven't met much due to visitors this summer. Had a laugh. Am making chilli con carne in the slow cooler as it seems so easy. Then I decided to clean the slattwd aluminium shutters. One set came off ok and was hosed down but couldnt lift the others so had to clean them on the walls made a bit of a mess.
Tis nice to be back to normal.

I doubt any fatted calf or fat of any sort will on the menu for a while with an ulcer Jno.Sorry to hear OH is still in hospital .Best place under the circs though but I hope soon able to come home. Now the oscopy is out of the way sleep may follow.Thinking of you both xx
Nothing doing here. These dark evenings are turning me into a lazy sloth already and the heating has me nodding off.I'll probably be hibernating in a cupboard by Christmas, all shrivelled up:)

Good day all...dull but not too cold I suppose. The leaves are turning and falling fast now.
Best wishes to your OH jno. Hospitals are the best/worst places to be. Don't worry about the nbm, get some Complan in, the chocolate one's nice.
I'm just the same shaney, I don't want to move at night. I do get up early though to try and see maximum daylight....not sure how long this routine will last :)
In other news (as woofy says and it makes me smile) my mammogram results are fine. Considering family history it's always a huge relief.

oh that's much better news Jno....you will need to peel and de seed the grapes as I bet the diet will be low residue....if she has to have the very high calorie food supplements (basically flavoured oil and sugar, like a melted very rich icecream) I understand they are better tolerated if served cold.
Afternoon all
That's good news Jno.Take seedless grapes.Complan is a good idea too.Hopefully it'll heal with the right diet and medication and an op won't be needed.Fingers crossed for you both.OH can relax and tell you to "peel me a grape" :)
Always a relief when the mammo results come back clear Robinia.I won't be called in any more now and will have to make my own arrangements if I want one.
I had poo sticks a couple of months ago and they came back clear. They always send Mr S a test kit too in spite of him telling them he doesn't need one as he's monitored by the hospital once a year.
It's a really dull day out there .Corned beef hash for dinner .I know how to live:)

grapes unwelcome, too acidy, but OH is basically allowed to have almost anything. Not coffee, fruit juice, chocolate or spicy stuff, and opinion seems divided about milk and tomatoes.
So that's a pile of grapes and Lindor chocs I'm now going to have to eat myself. Well well, silver linings eh? OH is looking reasonably chipper as the traumatic bits seem to be over and no longer in pain; but apparently three days of the drip is standard for treating ulcers, then you get put onto the same drug in tablet form.
Unfortunately it's some sort of PPI, which they now say doubles your chances of getting stomach cancer. I've been on lansoprazole for years (probably what's stopped me getting the same sort of ulcers from ibuprofen use) so maybe it's time to ask the GP about alternatives.

Things sound on the up then Jno. Yes, I think diet will have to watched.
I was given that lansoprazole stuff when I took ibuprofen because they said it protected your stomach but I stopped taking it after about a week as it made me feel awful for some reason.
Ibuprofen doesn't even touch my pain these days so am on stronger stuff ,Zapain, which is very good and doesn't need a PPI but as it's codeine based and can be addictive I try to ration it out and only take it at night, when I'm going to have to walk about for any length of time or when I really ,really cannot stand the pain any more.
