Can you use your ipod to play music now?
It might be worth trying a hard reset on the ipod. The method of doing this depends on the version you have. What ipod type and generation do you have?

It plays perfectly but when I plug it in to the computer it doesn't appear in ITunes. Used to pop itself in the listing on the left hand side. Had a look at the Apple website but it talks about locating it under devices in Itunes but when I look there - nada! It is as if it doesn't exsist

Sorry forgot to say - its a 4th generation.
Well you've got me confused, Mayennainse!

My link, above, specifically tells you what to do when your iPod is NOT shown under devices, so your statement that you've "had a look at the Apple website but it talks about locating it under devices in Itunes . . . " doesn't seem to relate to the information I've provided.

Follow all of the steps on that page (i.e. update iTunes, restart the iPod service, remove and reinstall iTunes, etc, etc) until you reach the point where your iPod is again recognised. (Clicking on each of those instructions opens up full details of what you need to do).

Well I know a lot about Ipods, sync and more! One of the solutions would be have you plugged 1 or more ipods into Itunes?
I have a similar problem and the strange thing is . . .the PC recognises it as a separate drive. Looking forward to someone's solution. I've tried the things mentioned already

Sorted!! Tried another lead and all now working perfectly. Thanks for all you efforts and sorry for being so thick!!
1. Reset or restore your iPod for a try, this can fix many general iPod problems.

2. You may try this iTunes alternative, I always use it to upload music and video to my iPod once my iTunes can't recognize my iPod, my friends recommend it to me, it's safe and works pretty well, you can also use it to copy music and video from ipod to computer for backup, it's useful when you lost your iTunes library.

3. Update your iTunes to the latest version. Plug in your iPod. If iTunes can't recognize it, then in iTunes in the top left corner click help> run diagnostics. On the box that comes up, check the last two things. Click next and it should identify your iPod. I got this method from Apple technical support. Hope it helps. Contact me if you have any other question.
