I have just tried to set up a wireless router I have received from my ISP. It works fine on my laptop and my sons I phone that are wireless enabled but on my desktop PC for which I have bought a wireless adaptor it can't find any wireless connections.I know the adaptor is Ok because I installed it on a friends PC. I have also tried connecting my PC with the supplied ethernet LAN cable non wireless without being able to open any websites.I have no problem using my original modem which is connected to a USB socket. Any help gratefully received.

You really need to have the PC connected (hardwired) with the ethernet (usually yellow) cable, for reliability and speed.
Check Firewall settings first.
lIke Albags, best to have your main PC hardwired for Broadband.

A laptop usually has the drivers for the wifi included in the Operating system. For another PC you need drivers for the wireless adapter AND then set the computer to find the wireless and set the encryption code.

I think (°¿°)

Thanks for the quick replies I have tried it hard wired with the yellow ethenet cable as said on my original question with no success as for firewall settings ALBags what should I be looking for. It has Mc Afee full security system installed. Please reply in simple terms am not very computer savvy!
Have a look through the McAffee firewall settings for the connection.
Try disabling/closing McAfee first to see if that fixes it. If you can refresh a Google page, it's working.
hi jg,
im nooo expert attall!!!
but, i had a similar problem a little while ago trying to wirelessly connect a 2nd laptop to my router.
it wasnt picking up any wireless signals and wouldnt connect with the ethernet cable either,
in the end my brother stepped in and got it sorted, and one of the things i know he had to do was put the disc in to the 2nd laptop again, the disc that came with the wireless adapter, and its working ok now.

Thanks all so far will try tomorrow disabling firewall as suggested when I have reconnected new router up again and take it from there

Well as suggested turned off Firewall on Mc Afee security centre. Can now open up webpages but all I get when clicking on a sub section is working offline and I cannot get it to connect. This is with the yellow ethernet cable which I have never used before is there some other settings to alter?
Connect your PC to the modem using the ethernet cable. Ensure your network card is set to obtain an IP address automatically.
