My wife is at present in Australia seeing her grandson for the first time Iam at home with her HP Laptop and she has asked me to try and set up a Skype connection on it. When I click on the Skype icon on the desktop it asks me for a mail address and password. My wife has a GMail address and after i put that in it asks me for a password but does not recognise her GMail password but asks for a Microsoft one. Can any please guide in the right direction to connect please.

If you don't know the password (and your wife can't supply it) then, as long as you can access her email account, you can get a new one:
https://login.skype.com/account/password-reset-request
It wont recognise the Gmail addy unless thats one of the ones she has and uses with skype.
asking for an MS one is purely because MS own Skpye so its defaulting to that.

Or create a new Skype account for yourself.

Neither of us has ever used Skype before, so do I read the answers correctly that a new account will have to be generated using her GMail address.
Yes, you will need to set up a Skype account.
You will also need to buy a webcam if you want to see each other as while as talk. They are not expensive Mine incorporates a microphone as well.
You may already have a webcam in your laptop.

Thanks again for all the helpful answers once again. So if I understand correctly I use the link given by Buenchico ad using her GMail address and creating a new password this will aceive being able to use Skype. Yes I believe her laptop has a webcam and assume also speakers.
Or your own email address, it doesn't have to be your wife's.

I have now managed to log in to Skype having found my wife's password etc. However Ithought this was a free service but on entering Skype they ask for subscriptions can anyone advise me and how I would connect to the home phone number she is at in Aussie.
Skype is free for calls Skype to Skype, worldwide.

If you want to call a 'proper' phone you need to buy credits to pay for the call.
If your wife has use of a pc in Australia she should install Skype too.

It costs roughly 3p per minute with Skype pay as you go; £8.50 a month, unlimited worldwide.
Skype is only free when you call other Skype users who are registered with Skype. To call a land line in any country is called "Skype out" and requires a minimum of £10 credit. As the previous posted suggested if they have any type of PC in Aus then just set up a Skype account and get them to e mail you their user name, you enter it in the search box, request friend they click accept and away you go. It's actually easier to do than explain. Skype out is still cheap, I put £10 on months ago and still have £5 left.

Am now in Skype but cant seem to find how where you put in their user name as I have said before at my advanced age do find the technology difficult. Am hoping to make contact via Skype later on tonight or tomorrow morning.
I use Skype on my mac and ipad - I don't use it on my pc, so I can't give precise instructions.

There should be a bit where you can search for Skype Contacts.

In there enter their email address or Skype name.

You then send a request to the other person, who then accepts you as a contact.

I get to a page where it gives my wife's name and a sign out sign and on this page several options but they appear to all be subscription calls I just cant seem to progress from there any other page i get says sin in which I am already HELP
I need itunes a/c & password to set Skype - isnt it same for all ?
You say you have managed to signup/in to Skyp using your wifes details.

She would need to sign in as a different user at her end, as you can't skype yourself!

eg. you signup as "husband", she signsup as "wife". "husband" then sends a contact request to "wife". "wife" then allows or blocks "husband". Once contact has been agreed between "hsband" and "wife" either can call or message the othe at anytim. You can't have "wife" trying to skype "wife"
Tamborine - itunes and skype are totally separate entities. You don't have to use the same username etc. for both.

She would be signing in using her son-in-law's details she did contct them several months ago via her Ipad hence that why she already had a account. What I just cannot seem to do is navigate within her Skype account to find the areas you have mentioned ie the search box to find her son-in-laws name/number.
