STARTTLS in Thunderbird

I've been using Thunderbird as my email client for a couple of years without any problems.

But these last few days when I try to send a message (I only send a few per week), I get the Send Message Error:

>Sending of message failed.
>An error occurred sending mail: Unable to establish a secure link with SMTP server >smtp.googlemail.com using STARTTLS since it doesn't advertise that feature. Switch off >STARTTLS for that server or contact your service provider.

The account security setting in Thunderbird is SSL/TLS and I haven't modified any of the settings since I first set the account up, so what has changed?

Incidentally I don't have any problems receiving messages.
