Google on "DVD Region Hacks" and you should find severl sites that will tell you how to convert your original player to Region 0 (all regions). Just find your make and model, It's usually some sequence using the remote.
Do you get a map coming up when you try and play the DVD ?

If so, the DVD checks to see if the player has been changed to allregion, try to see if you can find a handset hack that allows you to change the region to region 1 and not all region - that should do the trick.

Damn the companys that make it so difficult to play what you have purchased.

Some Region 1 DVD's are now RCE encoded which means they mont even play on a hacked machine, check on the back of the box. Got this quote from play.com -
Please Note: Regional Coding Enhancement (RCE): has been added by (studio) to certain Region 1 DVDs. RCE will prevent the DVD from playing on some Multi-Region DVD players. If you are in any doubt that your player may not be able to play RCE DVDs, we recommend that you do not order this title, as we are unable to accept returned RCE DVDs.
I would suspect that if the player is informing you that the disc is the wrong region, then the fault is with the player (it has been sold as multiregion and will not do the job it was sold to do). Return it for a refund, then follow Loosehead's advice about hacking your own player. Unless you have a very old TV it is unlikely that NTSC will be a problem, though there may be RCE issues depending on how the hack works.
It's not the player at fault it is the RCE as licklechap has said...thats why asked if the map comes up (a sure sign the DVD has RCE).

The only solution is to change from multiregion to region 1 (most handset hacks will give you the option to change to a specific region, but most people choose multiregion as that works for all discs without RCE).
