Keep getting this message--
CRITICAL ERROR MESSAGE!-REGISTRY DAMAGED AND CORRUPTED
to FIX this problem;
VISIT www.registrycleanerxp.com IMMEDIATLY
After you install the cleaner program you will not receive any more reminders or pop ups like this
What should i do,i bought a registry cleaner from ebay and scaned and fixed the problems but everytime i scan it finds one more,when i have AVG on it comes up as a threat warning.should i buy this cleaner to fix the problem or is it a con?if so what should i do?please help they keep poping up every 30 seconds or so and dont know what to do.Thanks alot.

Messages like that are usually spyware that just generate a real-looking message and then try to sell you their *wonderful clean up* program.
Run adaware and spybot search & destroy (I downloaded spybot s&d for free). My McAfee finally removed the little *mine* the spyware had placed in my utility tray.

hi thanks,just looked it up on the net and it says to dissable the messenger servise to stop the pop ups.i did this and they have stoped but it says however this will not stop the threat and to get better security for my laptop like firewall etc.can you recomend any good free or cheap security for me?
I could only suggest that you have a read of the stuff on this site. I use McAfee and have encryption on my wireless router but some spyware still managed to get through, so I will follow this thread with interest !

As suggested above, download and install Adaware and Spybot (both free). I also use Spyware Blaster and Windows Defender (both free too).
Once the programs you want are downloaded and set up, boot into Safe Mode and then run their scans - you'll have a much better chance of removing any nasties in safe mode.
If you're REALLY unlucky it might be a bit more complex than running the above progs, but 9 times out of 10 they should do the job.
PS Zone Alarm is also a good free firewall (I found Comodo a bit too verbose for my liking, though I didn't spend much time with the options).
