apparently it is your virus checker - it is screwed. Uninstall Norton's and other accociated products and then re-install and get "addaware" from www.lava.com
just to update previous answer - the proggy is called 'adaware' im sure previous poster is right but i had a virus once that could not be detected either.after searching on t'internet it turns out that it lived in a folder to which av progs do not have access
I've just had a really persistant virus, that eluded my friend (programmer by profession)'s best efforts for four hours. On his advice I purchased McAvie software package, and it picked up one file. After picking up its updates off the web, it found another 17 (!) and zapped those. It looks like modern viruses are more than a match for the basic free packagaes like Adaware, so you may need to shell out, but it's worth if for peace of mind, and safe operation.
Andy Hughes, you are confusing viruses and spyware. Adaware is a brilliant free programme for ridding your PC of spyware/malware but is not an anti-virus programme so do not expect it to catch these. McAfee is a very good anti-virus programme but is expensive whilst a more than adequate alternative is Avast available as a free download from avast.com and it updates its virus definitions automatically every time you connect to the web.
avg from grisoft is another good free anti-virus program. AdAware from Lavasoft will clean out spy ware, and Spybot is a useful long-stop. http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html Some viruses can knock out your anti-virus program, so a useful tool is the on-line check up from PandaSoft http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/
