My computer is generally muted and when i want to hear anything i just take the mute off by clicking on the speaker icon in bottom right hand corner. Then a little sliding volume thing came up and a mute box to click. I cant click on the icon now though, like i used to - how can i get mute off???

Hi ,use this link to get your icon back http://www.logicaltips.com/LPMArticle.asp?ID=1 33. Then right click icon (adjust audio properties) and your mute and volume control should be there (presuming you are running Windows).

Thanks for that - i have the icon with the red circle and white cross which i know means it is muted. What i cannot do is right click on it to undo the mute. I think it may be to do us dismantling everything to put the computer in a cupboard, i think it seems the speakers are not setup properly eventhough they are intergral! Hope that makes sense i know what i mean just bit difficult to put over in writing!
have you done any updates .... I'm set up for headphones - the slidey mutey thing only comes up after a 2 or three second left click - also an option to right click and open the volume control control. in there you can switch between Playback and recording
and either show or hide the icon
In propertied you can add/remove controls - and you can hide or show the speaker icon

but I don't ever remember seeing any options to change or enable/disable the clicky bit

do the speakers work?

when we initally set up the computer it had the problem we have now. A young computer minded friend happened to visit and he made the sound work. Then i used the slide control thing by right clicking. Id forgotten all about that problem til now when we took everything apart to put in a computer cupboard, connected everything up and my daughter then reminded me of the original problem which we are experiencing again. When i right click there are 3 options - playback devices, recording devices and sound and a 4th option open volume mixer (which i believe is the one i need) which is greyed out.

when i hover over the icon it says no output audio device is installed
How about trying system restore to a time you know it worked?
Question Author
that sounds like a good idea but could you give me some instructions please?
Go to Start button / All Programs / Accessories / System tools. You will find System restore there.
Start
All programmes
Accessories
System Tools
System Restore

Then follow the instructions.

Choose the most recent restore point with a date that you know it definitely worked. If it doesn't cure it, then undo the restore.
I wonder if you've disturbed the sound card moving the machine?

look in control panel | system | hardware | device manager

and see if you either haven't got a soundcard - or have one with a red circle against it

it's a box open job - (switch off) remove / reseat the soundcard - see if that cures it
didn't read the others ;(

DO NOT do a system restore - if it's the card - restoring drivers to a non-existent device won't help

check the hardware first - having dissembled - moved - and reassembled the box - why would anyone suspect software?
I'm so ashamed that I've been standing in the corner for two days now.
