What is the proper name, please, of the sort of lead that has a round plug-in fitting on each end, with 5 little "prongs"?

Co - ax cable?
Sounds like a DIN plug to me
What are you wanting to connect to what?

Best guess I can make just from the description you have given is a s-video lead.

Does sound like a 5-pin Din. Is it one of these:

Def a DIN:An acronym or abbreviation which shortens a few words.(S-Video is also a DIN but smaller)

thanks to everyone who replied. I think DIN plug is the word I'm searching for. It's to connect a reel-to-reel recorder to a cassette recorder.
