Lovely cake shop

A woman I used to work with always raved about a shop in the lake district that sold really lovely cakes. I am going there this weekend and was hoping to go (and eat many cakes) but have no idea where it was... it's a bit of a long shot, but does anyone know of somewhere that has such good cakes its worth visiting the town/village just for them?? I think it was also a cafe and sometimes held birthday parties.

There's an excellent tea room at the Gallery at Skelwith Bridge just outside Ambleside.  The cakes are memorable and very unusual.

There's a nice cafe in Grange-Over-Sands (not technically the Lake District, but close) which has nice cakes. It's on the row of shops as you're going in to towm, opposite the park.

also at the bottom of bowness is a tea room that do cakes, don't eat sweets so could not tell you if they are any good but they look well presented!

Thanks for your answers - I think it's Ambleside, that sounds familiar. I am however now thinking of touring the lakes, and planning my itinerary according to cake shops...

At the north end of Ambleside is the famous "apple pie shop" (yum!), and if you like gingerbread don't miss the world-famous gingerbread shop up the road in Grasmere. Also Cartmel (near Grange over Sands) is famous for its sticky toffee puddings

It sounds like it could be the Village Bakery at Melmerby near Penrith (www.village-bakery.com)

Also Cartmel Village Shop, home of the sticky toffe pudding!
