Uk Holiday - Any Suggestions?

Last year we had a good week in Bath. We would like somewhere else for 2016. We live in Scotland and would have to travel by train, so nowhere in the sticks please! I would like a place with a bit of history, maybe a historical stately home, places for day trips. Any advice?

Oxford, plenty around, never mind the Uni buildings but places like Woodstock (Blenheim Palace) some 7 miles out. The King's Arms is very nice, then you have a chain in the MacDonald's The Bear.....some good restaurants in the area too.........

Plenty of other stately homes - if you rent a car.....Stratford not that far too and everything in the Cotswolds between like all those Chippings.....

My favourite location in the UK is Northumberland....the coast, beaches etc. all unspoilt and quiet. Perhaps not far enough from home, for you?

Where I live - Hampton. Lots of history around here and there is a rather large stately home down the road. Plus a nice part of the Thames, good transport links, not much rain and loads of things to do.

Isle of Wight.. we went by car to Lymington.. but the railway also goes to Lymington.. Ferry crossing.. easy to get around... by bus.. hire car.. train etc.. Osbourne House.. is a MUST... fantastic place.. gorgeous place.. we certainly will go back ..

Come and visit us here in East Anglia. You don't need to go via London if you're coming down the East Coast Main Line; you can change trains at Peterborough and then travel on the cross-country route.

Norwich is a lovely city to explore, with lots of history, excellent theatres and live music venues, great pubs and some top quality restaurants:

Further, it's a superb base for exploring East Anglia by rail. £36.20 (reduced by a third for railcard holders) gets you unlimited travel for any 3 days out of 7 across Norfolk, Suffolk and much of Cambridgeshire. (Travel has to be after 0845 on weekdays - although there are some trains you can use earlier - or at any time at weekends or bank holidays):

So you could explore the Norfolk coast (Sheringham and Cromer are both very pleasant) or towns like Ipswich (don't miss the waterfront area)

(In both Ipswich and Norwich you can use your Anglia Plus rail tickets for travel between the rail station and the town/city centres as well).

I agree with the York suggestion.

One less obvious, but IMO well worth a visit is Liverpool. And if you have had your fill, or get a bit tired of Liverpool, a short train trip (passing under the Mersey) to Chester for the day is also very rewarding (and stop off at Port Sunlight if you're interested in Art and visit the Lady Lever Art Gallery there - although it is a bit of a trek from the nearest station - Bebington).

A city that is always overlooked is Liverpool !

Its much more than just the Beatles Trail. There is enough around the Albert Dock alone to cover 2-3 days. Take the Mersey Ferry across the water, while playing Jerry and the Pacemakers very loudly on your Walkman ! I did that about 30 years. The weather as atrocious but I had my cagoule on and stood out on the deck at the sharp bit, in the rain. It was so enjoyable, I did it twice !

All the locals were huddled in the cabin, looking at this mad chap standing out in the rain, singing to himself ! Bliss !

E Anglia is a good choice...easier if you are mobile though, otherwise somewhere like Liverpool is ideal as all points of interest are easily covered by public transport
