My sister had a black doll in the early 50s called Jetta. She had it because my Mum/Dad chose it for her. Not because they were advised to do so.She might have had a black doll but it didn't stop her saying in a loud voice on a bus,"Look mummy. That man is black ". Having a black doll did not teach her of the outside world at the age of four.

Always remember my friend's son coming home from school after his first day and telling his mum he had a new friend. Said his name was "Mohammed" or something similar. My friend asked if he was Indian and her son said that he didn't know but he would ask him the next day.
// My friend asked if he was Indian and her son said that he didn't know but he would ask him the next day. // It turned out his friend had the full feathered head-dress.
I had a black dolly in the mid-1050's. I called her 'Dulcie' and was very fond of her. I bought her for (I think) 3d at a jumble sale.
^^ At that time I'd never seen a black person, but loved 'Little Black Sambo', which I borrowed from the school library-perfect on!
