Mcmafia

After all the hype and endless trailers, this has turned out to be a huge disappointment. In spite of all the money that has been thrown at it, all we have are thoroughly unlikeable characters it is impossible to care about, long stretches when absolutely nothing happens, and James Norton's portrayal of the son is boring and bland. The next James Bond? You must be joking! I'll stick to Spiral, thanks

I watched the first episode (at the second attempt having fallen aslepp through it the previous evening!) and to my surprise thought it was excellent. Helped by the realistic effect of having some very fine Russian actors with actual language dialogue, the knowledge that the author of the origina McMafia has rated the programme very close to reality, and the fact that the plot (so far) is not as convoluted as I had feared (that may change)
Hint: when you have a drama about mafias, beware of running into "unlikeable characters" :-). I am not sure the point in this case is to elicit sympathy. More a "Wow! They do that and we let them?!" reaction.
The Russian embassy has already complained that it is an assault on truth, hilariously enough, as there are actually very few Russians in British prisons. But none of the gangsters featured here ARE in prison. That is the problem.
